DH (not British) says Arthur is too English. He likes Welsh names (I am Welsh) and has googled and says Arthwr is a Welsh spelling. It's not one I have ever heard and I think it's pretty obscure...it's a crazy idea right? A small part of me does wonder if it works though, and with Arthur shooting up the popularity charts maybe it would be an idea... After all no one thinks the welsh spellings of Alys and Huw are silly do they?

Please help my pregnancy befuddled brain on this one. Only 4 weeks to go! We have other ideas but none of the welsh ones are really standing out as much as DS1's did, and there aren't any from DH's country that he loves, in fact he hasn't suggested any at all!

I think Gethin is a fabulous Welsh name. Geth for short. Or Huw?

DH says Gethin sounds like Get in
I have been pushing for Huw since before conception but he still says no.

Gwilym had family connections and I haven't found anything that stands out like that did.

Shame- I think Hugh/Huw is lovely. I don't think anyone will have a problem with pronouncing Gethin since there's a famous(ish) one. And I do love Geth!
Emrys is nice. And Taliesin- but it's a bit hippy (if that bothers you!) Tal is good.

I think Arthwr is just setting him up for a lifetime of minor daily irritation.

Ah, I don't think you can have Gwylim and Gethin, can you? It sounds a bit like two guards in Merlin who fall asleep and let the baddies into the castle........

Not really- but there are a lot of welsh named guards- the equivalent of people in red shirts in Star Trek, if you see what I mean!

I've never seen/heard the Welsh spelling Arthwr (I'm first-language Welsh speaker). It tends to get spelt Arthur but prn. Arthir with a short 'ir' sound like in irregular.

Arthwr looks like I typo. I thought it was one, in your title.

Welsh names that do not have an exact homophone in English (most of the rest of your list) can look any way they want, IYSWIM, because people are not thinking of the English name.

Alys and Huw look like they are quite deliberate.

Arthwr looks like a typo. It's too close in spelling to Arthur to be easily recognised as a deliberately different name. (even though U and W are not close on the keyboard)

Not convinced about Arthwr as a spelling, it doesn't even make the sound of how I would pronounce Arthur in Welsh.

If you want to keep up the Arthurian theme though, how about Tristan (or Drystan for a more authentic spelling) very romantic!

Or you could keep up the Welsh bard theme, saw you have Aneirin, but Cian is another.

Other Welsh names I love are Gerallt, Guto, Gareth (has the advantage of working well in English), Macsen and Ianto

Welsh is my second language and I've never ever seen a Welsh spelling - Arthwr. I think it just looks like a typo too, like someone got a bit flouncy with the 'u'.

My favorite Welsh bits names are Emrys, Gethin, Dylan (pronounced Dil-lan) and Alyn.

Wooo I've just seen Beehatches post - Ianto. Definitely, gorgeous name. I've never met an awful Ianto.

My Dad (very welsh) has always used Ianto as a joke name for some reason.

V grateful for all the linguistics advice from Welsh speakers, I think that's what I wanted. Arthwr is off the list. Do you think Arthur will be a 10 to a class name in a few years?

Emrys is quite a recent idea but I think it's becoming a front runner. DH not keen on the sound, but if he keeps being this awkward he might just have to let me pick.

Ianto is good, Hugh is lovely (biased ) what about Rhys? I am not sure about Arthwr, it does look like a typo.

Aneirin I love (and like the idea of a bards theme! Relative Gwilym was a bard), just think that the non welsh will find it very hard.

I live in Wales and have never seen 'Arthwr'
Taliesin is a fab name, if i had another baby it would be top of the list.
I know/knew one recently and he had it shortened to 'Tali'.
