Arthwr

DH (not British) says Arthur is too English. He likes Welsh names (I am Welsh) and has googled and says Arthwr is a Welsh spelling. It's not one I have ever heard and I think it's pretty obscure...it's a crazy idea right? A small part of me does wonder if it works though, and with Arthur shooting up the popularity charts maybe it would be an idea... After all no one thinks the welsh spellings of Alys and Huw are silly do they?

Please help my pregnancy befuddled brain on this one. Only 4 weeks to go! We have other ideas but none of the welsh ones are really standing out as much as DS1's did, and there aren't any from DH's country that he loves, in fact he hasn't suggested any at all!

Just thought of a couple more
Gwydion
Rhodri
Carwyn
Emrys
And I knew a Caredig once (means kindness I think)

And you can't beat Bryn of course (DS middle name)

I think people pick up welsh names pretty quickly. I was at school in England and went to school with a Daffyd, Llewellyn, Rhys and Celyn.

Aneurin is lovely, also Ianto and Bryn.

welsh boys names here worth a look!

If you use Aneirin/Aneurin it usually gets shortened to Nye, so wouldn't be too difficult for non welsh-speakers. It's my reserve name if I have another ds (if not it will be the next lurcher boy!). Emrys is lovely.

What about Iolo
Aled,
Carwyn
Emlyn
Wyn
Ifan?

I too thought it was a typing error. I don't think this is a very good idea at all.

Like Emlyn, but it breaks my "no living relatives" rule.

Arthwr is definitely made up I'm afraid (I've seen all sorts of nonsense on baby name sites!)

Some lovely names here. Gwilym would have been a front runner if we'd had boys. Others we liked were:

Talfryn (Tal)
Mabon
Macsen

Maybe Talfryn could be a less wordy alternative to Taliesin? I agree with you, I love that name too, but the three syllables makes it a bit much somehow. Same short form...

Ianto is a bit of a joke name for our family too!! Actually like it and it's making a bit of a comeback but I could never use it. 'Ian-TO!'

and like Wyn but DH says its "too short" Confused

Hmmm...Talfryn is a completely new one to me. Like the sound very much. TAL-vrin

Are there any good previous owners? Fictional or historical?

It's just that with DS being called after our most (only!) famous relative I feel like I want DS2 to have a sort of a reason for his name too. Like a high achiever in history, or a poet, or even a legend. Hence my Erasmus idea (two pretty amazing previous owners) or Aneirin. That's also what puts me off Carwyn, no history. Does that make any sense?

Talfryn Thomas Grin. Taliesin is getting quite popular now but apart from Mr Dads Army I've never heard of another.

I'm Welsh and have never seen Arthwr either. I love Taliesin. I have a little Rhidian.

How about Alwyn, and Wyn for short? I know a grown up Alwyn and it's a lovely name. I have an Aneurin by the way... I do love the name!

TheFabulousIdiot · 07/10/2013 11:17

People will pronounce Aneurin/ Aneirin completely wrongly - they will say 'Ann-eye-rin instead of Ah-neigh-rin.

My great uncle is Talfryn Grin

He is in his sixties and quite the raconteur, he is very much a Tal.

Yes I see what you mean about the history. But...we went for a name that 'meant something' for our eldest; for our youngest we went with what sounded good. I much prefer youngest's name and kind of wish we'd prioritised that for the elder one too - their name becomes their name, and how it sounds is much more important than the odd occasion when they get to say 'I'm named after xxx actually...'

Just my thoughts on it anyway.

I considered Emrys for ds (would have been my choice if I was choosing alone iyswim) and his middle name is Erasmus. I love both. Iolo and Ianto are brill too.

The last three baby boys born locally were all called Arthur and I have 3 FB friends with Arthurs under 2. I think it's quite popular.

I was going to say Gwilym as well! I know 2, a 3yo and a 50ish year old.

How about Ieuan?

Love lots of these ideas, thanks, but there's often something like a close relative or a sisters ex that gets in the way. Your uncle sounds great TJim! Smile think I will add him to the list.

Stumps I'm amazed that anybody else came up with both Emrys and Erasmus for the same child... What name did you chose in the end? Don't worry if you'd rather not say.

oh yes, Idris is a lovely name - you can say you named him after the little dragon in Ivor the Engine or the hot actor of the same name who isn't Welsh to my knowledge but never mind.

I know a couple of Welsh Geraints which I think is a lovely name.
