Jacob?

Came across the name Jacob this morning and found it quite appealing. Does anyone have any views on this name - too popular, too old-fashioned etc? Can anyone suggest any similar names?

What I like about it is that it is simple and has a solid sound, but is not too ordinary, if that makes sense.

It's very popular, it must be in the current top ten boys names being used. It is a nice solid name, it sounds very trustworthy and it will age better than Alfie, Archie etc. so the only thing going against it is that there are lots of other little Jacobs around at the moment.

What about....

Noah
Saul
Jude

Choccyhobnob · 01/10/2013 13:57

Totally agree with squoosh lovely, traditional name, sounds nice, just v.v. popular

Tavv · 01/10/2013 14:09

I like it. It's a good old solid Biblical name, and Jake is a nice nickname.

Prefer Jonah or Noah if you're after a biblical name

squoosh · 01/10/2013 14:20

Apparently it was the fifth most popular boys name last year.

Littlecherublegs · 01/10/2013 15:18

It's a great name - I'd put it in a similar category to:
Joseph
Caleb
Gabriel
Noah
Joshua
(all lovely!)

MrsSpencerReid · 01/10/2013 15:24

I have a Jacob Grin I don't know another who, age wise, is within a year of him so I guess popularity must vary from place to place, if you love it, use it Smile

elcranko · 01/10/2013 15:54

I really like it. It is very popular- quite a lot of the baby boys I know that have been born lately are called Jacob. If popularity doesn't bother you then go for it, it's a lovely name!
I was also going to suggest Noah and Caleb, they are similar to Jacob IMO.

WinteronPluto · 01/10/2013 16:19

Thanks.

The ones I like best from the list (thanks littlecherublegs) - Gabriel and Joseph - are both unfortunately "taken" for me.

I'd appreciate some other suggestions if anyone has any - these are all along the right lines but none have completely grabbed me.

I like it.

At least one in each class I can think of 5 immediately. Really popular fine if this doesn't bother you would put me off.

Littlecherublegs · 01/10/2013 19:31

Jacob was on our shortlist along with:
Nathan
Leon / Leo
Marcus
Christian
Anthony
Louis
Hayden / Aidan
Dominic
Simon
Daniel

monstermissy · 01/10/2013 19:39

Do you think it's more popular after the twilight books/films? Jacob was the wolf bloke I think. I have a 17 yr old Jacob and have never come across another. Great name :)

toobreathless · 01/10/2013 19:44

TeamEdward Jacob is ranked no 5 and was number 1 in Wales last year so very popular.

& rightly so, good, sensible, timeless name.

TallulahBetty · 01/10/2013 19:45

I find it boring (sorry). I know literally 10 little Jacobs which is probably why.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 01/10/2013 19:46

I love it. I do have one though so am biased. Had no idea it was so popular; I didn't know any Jacobs when ours was born but there are quite a few in his school. Still like the name though, solid, sensible and suits a child or adult.

Littlecherublegs · 01/10/2013 19:48

Pressed send before I'd finish, sorry (our shortlist was quite long!!)

Zachary
Joel
Ciaran
Shaun
Theo
Harris / Harrison
Jared

WinteronPluto · 01/10/2013 19:50

It has put me off to hear it is so popular - had no idea!

I'm not very good with boys names. The only ones I like are those that have already been used by good friends and immediate family, such as:

Dominic, Daniel, Michael, Joseph, Alexander, Gabriel.

I also like Rafael - that's been the only name on my list for a long time!

Anything else of that nature?

I like Jacob not so much the inescapable Jake nickname.

Wafflenose · 01/10/2013 20:39

I love it! I am a teacher and only know one.

SoonToBeSix · 01/10/2013 20:41

DENMAN03 · 01/10/2013 20:42
