Love it. However I like names that are slightly quirky.

Disregard others opinions however and choose a name you love.

Selks · 28/09/2013 23:51

Dreadful, sorry.

mummyplonk · 28/09/2013 23:54

Sorry Spike sound like a rottwieler not a baby, have you a back up name?

I personally don't like it as have known 2 in RL. One was/is a bit of a drip and lived with his parents til well into his 40s, the other was a friends dog. If it's a name you both love and works with your surname then use it as you may regret it if you choose something else to please other people.

cherrycherry41 · 29/09/2013 00:19

Please dont do this to your child, he is a human being not a dog.

LentilAsAnything · 29/09/2013 00:20

Love it. Do it!

It's absolutely vile.

MrsMongoose · 29/09/2013 00:37

The Spike I know is gorgeous, Oxbridge educated and on a 6 figure salary.

I'm all for quirky, distinguishing names that make people notice you. But you have to be sure that your child will be on the right side of 'noticed' - ie, admired and not bullied.

I'm not sure it's a risk I could take. Middle name yes, but first no. Weedy, shy, underachieving Spike will hate growing up with that name.

Onesleeptillwembley · 29/09/2013 00:53

Not just awful, fucking awful. Fine for a dog, but this is a person, an actual person that you're naming. Please don't.

Snoot · 29/09/2013 00:56

Love it! Please do it! It's super cool and easy to spell, what's not to like? I suppose it depends on your peer group, if his school will be full of m

Snoot · 29/09/2013 00:59

Sorry, it's the phone!

Full of (middle class) slightly bohemian types you'll be fine, if it's full of people with pitt bulls called Spike, possibly not! Wink

rundontwalk · 29/09/2013 01:09

Not a fan, sorry! Sounds like a dogs name to me.

TheFantasticFixit · 29/09/2013 01:10

No shit. Not like An Actual Person, for REAL?! Thanks for the reminder...

We live in SW London so don't see many pitbulls around.. Good point about there being a bit of an onus on him being able to carry it off though. I do know a couple of Spikes who are gorgeous, lovely boys. Never met a dog called Spike but have owned a George and an Alfie and my best friends dog is Jack.. Obviously have got my names for humans v dogs all muddled according to some of these replies!

Great name, but I wouldn't do it personally. Use it as a nickname instead?

OhDearNigel · 29/09/2013 01:15

Needs to be a nickname. Give him a proper name and calls him spike as a pet name.
I know a Spike. (Due to Milligan being his surname). It didn't hamper his career in child protection

OutragedFromLeeds · 29/09/2013 02:52

It's fine as a nickname, but I really, really wouldn't use it as a given name.

DaleyBump · 29/09/2013 02:58

You asked for opinions, no need to be snippy. Yes, it sounds like a dog's name.

She's not been snippy . Confused

Yes she has Hmm

poppingin1 · 29/09/2013 03:12

Oh no.

I don't think peer group matters either.

If I heard someone calling 'Spike' I would assume they were calling out to their dog which they had unimaginatively named.

But if you like it, it is your choice.

sleepingbeautiful · 29/09/2013 04:01

If you decide to go for it, I'd def give him a v ordinary middle name like James, so if he has trouble carrying it off as an adult then he gets a blend in option. If you and DH are quirky, confident sort of people then I'd be more in favour (nature and nuture working together for DS then) than if you are more run of the mill who just happened to have unusual name taste.

Chottie · 29/09/2013 05:29

Sorry another no. IMO it sounds like a dog's name or a cartoon character.

Please reconsider - your DS will be answering to whatever name you chose for him for his whole life........

SatinSandals · 29/09/2013 05:42

Give him a sensible name and then choose a nickname.
