A sister for Jupiter?

We have decided to wait until the twins are born to decide their names as it seems we can't settle on two this time round. We're having b/g twins and have a list of possible names that flow and match each other as well as the other DC.

We both fell in love with Jupiter so it's on the list but cannot find a girl's name that matches (topic wise) or flows. We did love Astra Faye but sounds too close to Ash Tray!

We don't like Juniper, Juno as they're too close in name.

Any ideas?

This is edging into Isadora and Jocasta territory again....

BoyMeetsWorld · 22/09/2013 08:02

Nerina is gorgeous. Don't like Ala at all I'm afraid (plus some people may think you've given a 'messiah' type name due to pronunciation which isn't a great idea).

With unusual names make sure you google them before deciding to check what other products / celebrities etc might have that name. Aura, for example, is a beautiful word but also a range of stoma bags.

oakmouse · 22/09/2013 08:12

I love love love Seren. How about one of the Latin-derived names like Lydia, Antonia, Julia, Marcella, Lucinda, Flavia, Helena? imposing enough to stand up to Jupiter! Selina- Latin for 'heavenly'.

gazzalw · 22/09/2013 08:19

What about Seres?

Ruprekt · 22/09/2013 08:20

Love Nerina!

badtime · 22/09/2013 09:27

I just had a look at a list of constellations. Three which are names which haven't been mentioned:
Carina
Vela
Lyra

Roman goddesses which I don't think have been mentioned:
Fortuna
Lucina
Epona (one for the nerds)
Mellona
Pax
Pomona

Other goddesses/mythological figures:
Damara
Radha
Leto
Asteria
Selene
Saga
Zisa
Inanna/Ishtar
Tiamat (I think this is the best name ever - in Mesopotamian myth, she was the primordial goddess of the ocean)
Zorya or Zarya

I don't like Jupiter particularly - my imaginary astronomical/mythological son is called Orion.

dementedma · 22/09/2013 09:35

Wow. And to think that someone posting on here about calling their kid chardonnay Tyler would get universally slammed, but Jupiter and Aurora is seen as OK.
Got to love MN.

BoyMeetsWorld · 22/09/2013 09:43

Ooh Jupiter & Lyra would be nice?

badtime · 22/09/2013 09:51

demented, actually, they wouldn't necessarily. I have read threads from people trying to get a middle name for the Chardonnays or Tylers, and people generally say "it's not to my taste, but..", and make suggestions. Names like 'Ptolemy' (perceived as pretentious) get a bigger slating than anything else.

A lot of people on this thread have said they don't like Jupiter, or even that they find it ridiculous.

JumpingJackSprat · 22/09/2013 09:57

as a twin i would have hated to be called gemini due to the astrology sign being twins. way too cheesy. i like isis best i think.

NationMcKinley · 22/09/2013 10:35

Isis is lovely. Goes brilliantly with Jupiter. Still like Galaxy and Luna. How about Magellan? As is clouds of. I think you should have a look at some astronomy sites Smile

Oriunda · 22/09/2013 11:28

Ok I think Isis and Lyra are front runners now ... both go really well with Jupiter. Am v jealous!

AlansCatalanCat · 22/09/2013 12:38

I still like Zoe.

Not precisely a myth/space name, but it means Life - so, Life, the Universe and Everything - it's a good start anyway Grin

MultipleMama · 22/09/2013 12:50

Never heard of someone called Isis before so unsure how you would pronounce it. How would you? I know she's an Egyptian Goddess.

DH thinks we should now call her Starr. He's getting desperate, bless him.

I love Lyra and Faye. DH and I are going to list of the names you've listed and short-list them :)

rosyryan · 22/09/2013 13:00

Isis is pronounced Eye-sis OP. Its gorgeous with Jupiter.

MultipleMama · 22/09/2013 13:01

DH thinks Lyra Sophia & Jupiter Sevastyan. Thoughts? I'm unsure.

OP posts:
AlansCatalanCat · 22/09/2013 13:03

Isis is also an alternative name for the River Thames in Oxford.

charleslingus · 22/09/2013 13:09

Sorry if I've doubled up on any but I have tried to follow this thread:

Galilea (Galileo first discovered Jupiter)

Elara, leda, thebe are all satellites of Jupiter

Jupiter Sevastyan is gorgeous,
Lyra goes very well too.

daughterofafarmer · 22/09/2013 13:20

Why does your son get to have Jupiter which is an outgoing bold name and your daughter gets Lyra? Don't get me wrong I really think Lyra is a lovely name but it's not really in the same league as Jupiter! It's a tiny but plain IMHO

What about Gallia?

God it's tough, we can't agree on 1 name let alone 2 Grin

badtime · 22/09/2013 13:24

Lyra is a constellation, the lyre. In myth, it was placed in the sky after its owner, Orpheus, died. It's not boring.

daughterofafarmer · 22/09/2013 13:29

I didn't say it was boring! Just not in the same league as Jupiter.

Lots of little girls running around called Lyra, very few boys I image called Jupiter!

AlansCatalanCat · 22/09/2013 13:29

Yes, Jupiter is a little thing orbiting one star. Lyra is a whole bunch of stars, therefore Lyra > Jupiter by a long way Grin
