A sister for Jupiter?

We have decided to wait until the twins are born to decide their names as it seems we can't settle on two this time round. We're having b/g twins and have a list of possible names that flow and match each other as well as the other DC.

We both fell in love with Jupiter so it's on the list but cannot find a girl's name that matches (topic wise) or flows. We did love Astra Faye but sounds too close to Ash Tray!

We don't like Juniper, Juno as they're too close in name.

Any ideas?

Gaia and Cosima are marvellous.

I must say though that my previous post probably explains why one should not mumsnet whilst plastered.

LeGavrOrf · 21/09/2013 00:27

You CANNOT use Juno or Hera for reasons explained.

Astra no, but Aphra yes.

curlew · 21/09/2013 00:28

"Just shrug at them and say ask my mum."

When he's 25? Honestly, I wish I could get my unusually named family members on here. It's a real issue. There are loads of fantastic, unusual names that don't make people stop and say "I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that" every single time you give your name for 85 years

MultipleMama · 21/09/2013 00:28

I'm not using Juno or Hera for those reasons also!

Drunk replies are usually the best Wink.

Scarlet. Definitely.

MultipleMama · 21/09/2013 00:34

When he's 25 then he's old enough not to explain to them if he doesn't want to. He can make up a magical horror filled story if he wants to. In 25 years time I bet their will be more unusual names than Jupiter. I can't judge what people will think in years to come.

I absolutely love the name Juniper, not so sure on Jupiter, it sounds hard and a little clumsy. However I think it would sound pretty cool with Io (which is such a cool name! Although I am a little biased)

WildThongsHeartString · 21/09/2013 00:37

I've just caught up with this thread. Op, you actually are considering calling a baby boy Jupiter?
Well, quiver my uterus, hopefully you are taking the piss. If not be aware of what lies ahead for this innocent child.
Bampot.

curlew · 21/09/2013 00:38

oK, when he's 10 then? It is so unfair to do this to a child. I just can't understand why people are so arrogant. They are making an important decision own behalf of a person unable to consent. And they make it based on personal vanity. And a need to tell the world how incredibly hipster and quirky and oddball they are. Completely forgetting that their child might be a quiet, mousy, conventional little soul who would hate any unnecessary attention.

EastFife5Forfar4 · 21/09/2013 00:48

Jupiter is marvellous. Ignore those who would rather we all call our children Oliver and Amelia.

DaleyBump · 21/09/2013 00:53

My name is Dale and I was bullied for it terribly. It's not that unusual either. A child can get bullied for anything, not just their name.

I love the name Jupiter. I think it's gorgeous.

DaleyBump · 21/09/2013 00:55

Curlew, how's this - if you have a son, don't call him Jupiter. Done.

curlew · 21/09/2013 01:16

I won't. I just think it's odd to project your wishes onto your child like this. Odd and mind bogglingly selfish.

But I suppose some people do live through their children......

DaleyBump · 21/09/2013 01:19

ODFOD.

WafflyVersatile · 21/09/2013 01:32

I think Calypso sounds good with Jupiter

Jupiter and Calypso
Calypso and Jupiter
Jupiter and Calypso
Calypso and Jupiter
Jupiter and Calypso
Calypso and Jupiter

I realise you have dismissed this suggestion already but

Jupiter and Calypso.

'ask my mum' sounds like a perfect retort at 25.

Curlew, surely everyone does this in naming their child. They project their image of and feeling for a name onto their child.

How else would you name your child.

I agree that it can be dull repeating your name or spelling it but I have to do that all the fucking time and I'm not called anything very exotic at all.

onelittlepiglet · 21/09/2013 01:46

Seren (for a girl) means star in Welsh. Jupiter and Seren sound good together.

Driz · 21/09/2013 01:48

I love that combo onelittlepiglet!

JumpingJackSprat · 21/09/2013 07:00

there are worse names than jupiter that get bandied about on here - how bloody boring would it be if everyone called their kids charlotte and matthew which are two of the dullest names going - id rather my child was at least slightly distinguished from the rest of the class rather than being "amelia c" or whatever for their whole school life. i would wonder why my parents lacked imagination. jupiter isnt massively outrageous anyway.

charleslingus · 21/09/2013 07:23

Jupiter is nowhere near as crazy as some, but I suppose some people live lives that only expose them to very conventional names. I wouldn't worry one jot about them, they are such a minority in the wider sense.

The rest of the world isn't like that and there are a myriad of unusual names that are familiar now. The one I know gets called Jupe or Jupi as well as his full name.

fatfinger · 21/09/2013 07:29

Better to be distinguished via your own choices though (or your own talents) not by your parents liking the name of a Roman god.

Venus Williams is indeed doing well for herself, probably because she is the best tennis player in the world. Your son will really need to excel to carry off the king of the gods name!!!

Just asked my 5yo dd if she would like to be called Jupiter and she gave me the biggest Hmm face possible. I then asked if Jupiter was a really cool name and she said no it was a silly name for a person but a good name for a planet (they've just been studying them).

It's not about calling your child Oliver etc, it's about drawing a line between unusual and bloody ridiculous.
