Hi there,

Just looking for some honest opinions on the name Yasmin. We already have a son called James. I liked the name Jasmine but figured we couldn't really have two children who's names start with the same letter. So I thought Yasmin would be nice. But now I'm wondering if it is too unusual and doesn't really go with James. What do you think? Many thanks! x

Yes it is nice. But James & Jasmine are perfectly acceptable IMO.

Yes

I definitely prefer Jasmine but both lovely names.

If it helps, my friend has a Lucy and a Lucas. Now they are similar Smile

Both are lovely. I have the same first initial as my brother - it's not weird or even noticeable so don't over think it.

Bowlersarm · 31/08/2013 22:45

I prefer Jasmine. I think it's fine to have two initials the same. By the time they are opening post they'll be 'Mister' and 'Miss'. Other than that I can't see why it would matter.

lifeislikeaboxofchoccies · 31/08/2013 22:50

Thank you all. Smile Yes perhaps I am over thinking the whole both names starting with the same letter thing. They will both have different middle names so hopefully there won't be too much confusion in later years when it comes to receiving post etc! I think I do prefer Jasmine, but still... why is choosing a name so hard Confused

I know a lovely Yasmin. I do prefer Jasmine though.

I know someone with a Hayley and a Haydon.

justhayley · 31/08/2013 23:59

I think it's a lovely name but like everyone else prefere Jasmine and also think it works better with James

HipHopHooray · 01/09/2013 00:10

I love Yasmin. Gorgeous.

ZingWantsCake · 01/09/2013 00:12

I prefer Yasmin.

but I'm biased

RhondaJean · 01/09/2013 00:18

I have a friend called Yasmin and she's wonderful, beautiful intelligent funny hard working talented caring...

I do think James and jasmine sound better together though.

Devora · 01/09/2013 00:19

Yasmin very pretty. So is Jasmine.

ZingWantsCake · 01/09/2013 00:42

I think James and Jasmine together are too same-y

not as bad as John and Joan, but too similar

Alisvolatpropiis · 01/09/2013 00:51

It's nice but is also the name of a commonly used contraceptive pill.

James and Jasmine sounds fine together. Keep in mind they will be adults and separate from each other longer than they will be children and accounced together.

PuffandStuff · 01/09/2013 00:57

Sorry had to laugh when you asked if Yasmin was too unusual - where I live we have big Yasmin, Little Yasmin, The Other Yasmin, Yasmin A Yasmin M Yasmin S - Loads of Yasmins around here!

Lovely name - James and Jasmine work well I think.

CointreauVersial · 01/09/2013 01:20

Don't like it, sorry.

Or Jasmine. Reminds me of my least-favourite fragrance.

Pendeen · 01/09/2013 01:28

Jasmine.

Definitely.

lifeislikeaboxofchoccies · 01/09/2013 09:50

Yikes I had no idea it was the name of a contraceptive as well! Just my luck Sad Thanks all so much for your comments, I shall have to have a good think about it and discuss with my other half. Got a few more days to think about it! Smile

Jasmine and James are more in keeping with each other.
Yasmin to me doesn't look right or found right!

JazzAnnNonMouse · 01/09/2013 11:00

Sound

DanicaJones · 01/09/2013 11:03

I prefer Jasmine

Littlecherublegs · 01/09/2013 12:19

Prefer Jasmine too and think it goes fine with James.

TwoStepsBeyond · 01/09/2013 12:44

I prefer Yasmin, its a bit more unusual and exotic sounding than Jasmine.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Jasmine & James, but having 'matching' names does sound a little bit contrived, even if it isn't (speaking as someone whose 2 DSs regrettably ended up with the same initial, it can be a pain but it's also useful for hand-me-downs!)

ch1134 · 01/09/2013 14:20

I've known lots of Yasmin's and they were all of Persian decent. I wasn't sure you could get away with it unless you had some link there?
