Keir?

This is the only boy's name dh & agree on, mainly because we're both raving lefties .

However, I wonder if it's too unusual or too much like a girl's name. And yes, I do know Keir Hardy's first name was actually James, but we already know a few of those.

I'm the last person to think 'queer' would be a devastating nickname - being 'right-on' comes with the territory, but I'm aware my future teenage son might feel a little differently... Do you think the name will be hugely problematic?

I like the way it looks but how is it pronounced??

I have a Ciar - pronounced exactly the same, the only teasing he has ever had was because it rhymed with Beer which is hardly disastrous - he is 12 now. There are a few in his older brothers year at school (spelt Keir) and I don't think they get any bother either.

It's seriously not that common, there are just geographical reasons why there is a bit of a cluster where we now live.

It was really unusual where we lived when he was named.

I obviously like it - one of those names where they could be anything in life. I also loved Kerr but it was vetoed :(

There's also a building round here named after KH, so I'm hoping locals will get the historical context. That said, i'm still Nervous about telling anyone in RL before the birth, even the dcs, in case they hate it.

Our first has a name which is still my favourite, and was he only one we agreed on. I would have hated the shine to have been taken off it

I love it too - DH vetoed it because of how it goes with our surname (he had a point), but otherwise it would have been one of my top choices.

AFAIK Queer isn't the preferred term of homophobic abuse (at least round here) at the moment

I know two, one a teen, one a gorgeous wee baby. But I am in Scotland, where surnames as first names is a bit of a thing. I love it: it means 'dark' though, so if you're both blonde and likely to have fair babies, you might want to bear it mind.

I love it, but tried it out on a few people and was put off . I'm gutted I didn't go with it cos it's a fab name (and I'm a leftie too!).

Don't know anyone else with the name either, whereas DS1 is one of dozens around us .

My Ciar didn't have a name for a week and a half - he was very dark both hair and skin tone. I wanted Kerr, OH wanted Ciaran, so we compromised and thought the meaning suited him too (Ciaran being the little dark one and we didn't think he would be little). Anyway, by 18 months he had a mop of blond curls!! He is dark again now though :)
