Keir?

This is the only boy's name dh & agree on, mainly because we're both raving lefties Grin.

However, I wonder if it's too unusual or too much like a girl's name. And yes, I do know Keir Hardy's first name was actually James, but we already know a few of those.

I'm the last person to think 'queer' would be a devastating nickname - being 'right-on' comes with the territory, but I'm aware my future teenage son might feel a little differently... Do you think the name will be hugely problematic?

Brill name! I am biased - I have a beautiful 9mo Keir asleep in his cot upstairs as I type :-)

DH and I also raving lefties and we live ina terrible Tory heartland so we thought it was a good way to name our son whilst also sticking a big middle finger up at all the Thatcher fans and Daily Fail readers round here.

Go for it! A cute name for a little boy and a mysterious cool name for a teenager. Will also look good on a business card/envelope when he's 45 :-)

Luckily we're both dark, so not out of the question that our lo might be too!

Just swatted up on Fenner Brockway - what an amazing life he led. That's quite eerie, actually, as Keir Hardie would've been my great-great grandparents' MP & Fenner Brockway would have been the MP where my other grandmother grew up. Random facts, but it's nice to find a personal connection...

bot that's true, i can imagine a Keir being one of those teenage boys all the (slightly geeky) girls are intrigued by! Well done you & your dp on the choice of name. It's funny how many parents of Keirs there are on here & yet I can't even seem to find it listed in any of the baby name stats.

I agree that it isn't universally popular, but there are 3 Keir's out of 78 boys in my son's year at school, not sure about the older classes and my younger son is the only one of 79 in his year, we also know a few others that are not at their school so it is a real statistical blip. We are in Scotland but even so, you would be struggling to find 1 boy with that name in most schools.

We have also only ever found one other Ciar on the statistics since my son was named.

The two names have very different bakgrounds but I think probably stem from the same root. Keir is from the Scottish surname and used as a forename. Ciar is the Gaelic form meaning dark and is usually only known as a name as part of Ciaran, which means the little dark one - the "an" bit being little. We didn't think he would be little so it made sense to remove it. Plus I much preferred Keir or Kerr to Ciaran.

Love it! It was on my list but vetoed by DH

Rhubarbgarden · 30/08/2013 12:49

Love it.

MrsMongoose · 30/08/2013 12:55

I like it. I met a really sexy 30 something with this name recently, so now I just associate the name with beautiful men.

DanicaJones · 30/08/2013 13:07

Great name. I knew a Keir named after Keir Hardie and he was cool.

I have to agree with you even though I am probably biased :o

As a boy my son was prettier than most of the girls in his class. Now at just turned 12 he is 5'6" longish dark hair, greeny/blue grey eyes, cleft chin, big dimple on one cheek, sunny smile, white even teeth and a beauty spot. he is still quite pretty rather than manly though.

BangOn · 30/08/2013 14:05

Well, I'm hoping the name works its magic with my lo because if the scan's anything to go by he takes after dh Wink

Ha Ha - tbf he wasn't a very good looking baby (i'm sure that makes me sound a terrible mother!) but his brother was a hard act to follow :) But he blossomed when he hit about 10 months or so, so there is hope yet :o

cheekbyjowl · 30/08/2013 22:45

love the name. was in my top 3 but vetoed as didn't go with.our surname. like you my dh is also slightly darker skinned so seemed like a good fit..also like keiran as a name...knew a hunky keiran. I say go for it...unless that building you mentioned has blue and yellow chimneys

KateCroydon · 30/08/2013 22:59

love it.

lilaloves · 09/09/2013 20:00

Went to school with a Keir and his nickname was queer but that was 18 years ago! noone will care in 15 years time.
Go with it if you love it.

twentyfourcarat · 11/09/2013 10:01

Was my favorite name for years and still very fond of it. Keir Dillon makes it even cooler (snowboarder) I like Dillon/Dylan too!

Gorgeous though, hope you enjoy your little man!

BangOn · 11/09/2013 20:16

Oooh, he's rather handsome Grin. Hadn't heard of him before! Just goes to prove the theory that it's a nme for beautiful men!

I love it. Keir Starmer for instance is the attorney general and that's pretty damn cool in my book.

MrsDibble · 11/09/2013 21:59

I have a nephew called Keir and he has never been teased about his name to my knowledge.

It's a really nice name and I think it has worked for him.

Best not to tell anyone in advance whatever name you pick as someone will always dislike it and it could put you off.

soontobeslendergirl · 11/09/2013 22:30

I have some photos of mine on my profile from when he was younger - I think he was cute but then I am obviously biased :)

ZolaBuddleia · 12/09/2013 15:09

I love it too. The only K name I like, in fact!

BangOn · 12/09/2013 17:42

Thanks all! soontobe - your ds is truly gorgeous. Bless Smile

It's a good job i'm already up the duff, or i'd be really broody now Grin

The one I know hasn't suffered with it growing up. It is a lifelong sign around his neck proclaiming,
"my parents read The Guardian" which sometimes draws negative comments from a certain faction of his colleagues.

Tinlegs · 12/09/2013 20:00

I teach a lovely Keir so have very positive feelings about the name.
