2012 Top 100 Baby Names

My daughter is within top 100, but not top 10.
Neither DF or I seem to be on this list, but my spelling is a tad different from the original, so will look again.

My sisters name is in here.

DS top 20.
DH not in top 100 (foreigner!)
I'm not in top 100 although my name is very common for my age group.

steppemum · 12/08/2013 22:18

I didn't want popular names, but

ds is in top 30
(wasn't when we named him, wasn't in top 100 and it is family name - we obviously started the trend Grin

dd1 has long name that no-one else in UK has, short name is top 30

dd1 not in top 100

me - not on list but if was 1990, would have been no.2 or 3

dh - no-one else in Uk!

notanyanymore · 12/08/2013 22:20

Dd1 is not in the top 100 Dd2 is in the top 20, yet we know 2 other little girls with the same name as Dd1 locally and none with Dd2's!

CheckpointCharlie · 12/08/2013 22:20

Yup. Dd1 coming in at #1. Dd2 not there!!!!
DH middley, me nowhere to be seen!

Liara · 12/08/2013 22:20

On the long list, dh and me are in 600 odd position, ds1 in 900odd.

CookiecutterShark · 12/08/2013 22:21

Ds is an Oliver so no.2! His middle name is there near the bottom and he shares that with my dh. My name isn't there, although a shortened form is - and my name is really common (especially, though not only, in my age group). Dd's name is also not there, but then I've never met another child with the same name and it's not really 'out there' - she's a Tess.

None of my siblings or my dh's are on there either and they don't have unusual names - obviously we are all of our time in this family!

FourLittleDudes · 12/08/2013 22:24

I am in the 90s

One of my boys is midway down the list and my other 3 boys are no where to be seen!

sausageandorangepickle · 12/08/2013 22:54

all 3 DCs in top 40 (or versions of) but in RL don't know anyone with 2 of the names and a few of the other, but not the same age as that DC so all good!!

curlew · 12/08/2013 23:00

Dd is, but she's 17 and her name raised eyebrows( to put it mildly) when we named her. Which is an important thing to remember if you are trying to find unusual names for your children!.

TheMagicKeyCanFuckOff · 13/08/2013 00:27

Yep. DD1 is very popular, DD2 has a name traditional to my country, but is still in there, but less popular than top 50, but a more usual spelling (in other countries who use that name- in my country, I used the normal spelling) is in there. DS' name is also quite high there. I'm not on there at all as have a very unusual name, not for my country though.

VenusRising · 13/08/2013 00:40

My name is in the top 50, but no other family member is there.
When I was young(er!) no one had my name round our area.

hardbeingme · 13/08/2013 00:44

i'm top 10, one ds is top 10 and the other is in the top 50. dp isn't there but am sure it would've been if it was still the 70s and dd isn't there but her nn is.

funnily enough with dd (pfb) i was adamant we weren't going to have something popular and vetoed lots of names on that basis, but when i was carrying the boys i picked their names and then checked popularity and just didn't give a shit! tbh i never really found a name i 'loved' with dd, dp pushed for it and i do like it but still occaisionally wonder if i made the right choice.

kiwik · 13/08/2013 00:45

Nope - most common in our family is DS2, who comes in at 256.
I'm 934, DH and DS1 both at 977. Poor DS3 is way out at 1589.

DH if he used his given name (which no-one in his family does despite it being every eldest son's name for 4 generations until I interferred - they all use their middle name) would be at #10.

With colossal arrogance, I am going to c and p something I said on another thread. I think sometime people get unnecessarily worried by where names are on the list.

It's important to remember that, even if a name is 27 in the top hundred, you still aren't very likely to bump into many. For example, statistically you'd have to meet 270 babies before you met another Leo. Of course, you'll notice th name if you hear it at all because you're tuned in to it, but the chances are he'll still be the only one in his school. Even names seen as incredibly popular, like Grace and Ruby are only given to one in 100ish girl babies, so in a school of 200 there should only be 1.

This is all skewed by area and social class of course- if you're at Cheltenham Ladies College you are very likely to be the only Chardonnay-Midori, but unlikely to be the only Annabel. But the core principle holds good. Even Harry- number 1 on the list. Only 1 in >100 of them!

RubyGoat · 13/08/2013 07:38

DD is in the top 20, was born in 2012. DH is in top 100, I'm not, although we both have fairly common names for our age.

katydid02 · 13/08/2013 07:39

No, none of us are. Not sure where I am but both of the DCs are way down the list for popular names.

cjdamoo · 13/08/2013 07:40

dd not in top 100 3 outta 4 ds in top 100 one In top 10 me and hubby dont feature

Ragwort · 13/08/2013 07:42

My DS is in the top 5 Grin but, as curlew points out, in reality he doesn't meet that many boys with the same name.

My DH's name doesn't even appear in the top 100 but is an incredibly popular name for men of his generation (my brother has the same name) - in our small road there are three with the same name (out of eight houses) - they are known affectionately as big Pete/little Pete and new Pete (not real name) Grin.

My name doesn't appear anywhere and quite honestly I get pretty fed up constantly having to spell it so would much rather have a more popular name !

Peachyjustpeachy · 13/08/2013 07:43

dd in top 95,
Me and DP not in

RobinSparkles · 13/08/2013 07:46

Both DD1 and DD2 are in the top 20, well the alternative spelling of DD1's name is in the top 20, her spelling is a lot lower. Seems people are opting for the frillier version :o.

RobinSparkles · 13/08/2013 07:50

Me and DH aren't in the top 100. My name was a very popular 70s/80s name and I don't think his has ever been that common. He's the only person I've ever known with his name, apart from a famous person. I think it's more common in the states. I did hear a little boy, aged about 5, being called DH's name, in the park and I must admit, I did Hmm.

VeryDullNameChange · 13/08/2013 07:52

That's interesting work Horry - really surprised to see that all the Ellie/Ella/Eleanor/Eloise's of a decade ago now can't crack your list. I reckon you should amalgamate Amelie with Amelia, but can't open the xls on my phone to see what that would do.

DS has been top quartile on that list for the last century I think. DH and I have very normal names for our age group which are nowhere to be seen - not Wayne or Tracey or anything obviously dated, just names that don't occur to people in the 21st century when naming babies.

shoobidoo · 13/08/2013 07:56

Dd is in top 200 (just outside top100)
Ds is in top 2000 (name used 12 times last year)
Dh in top 100 and me in top 200

weebarra · 13/08/2013 08:04

DS1 is top ten, DS2, DH and I are nowhere. We're in Scotland though and the lists are very different, especially for boys I think.
