Thoughts on Pandora?

I recently read a baby names book where it said it was popular among the horsey crowd. Well, we are in no way horsey, very far from it. This puts me off the name slightly.

Also my husband thinks she would get bullied at school - 'Pandora'a box' etc. This hadn't occurred to me and I still think it's a bit silly.

I love the name Panda for short, is that a bit silly?

Not great associations with the mythology - released all of the world's evils because she is nosy?! Sorry, it's just what comes into my head when I hear it.

I'm afraid I just think Adrian mole and inevitable box jokes too, although I love the name.

think there was a character in a Jilly Cooper book called Pandora hence the horsey connection, too much connection to bracelets for me

as i am sure you know, it means 'all gifts' - what about just Dora (gift) or Theodora (God's gift)

I used to love it while I was reading the Adrian Mole books. It is a nice name so if you love it and if all the associations don't bother you then use it - it will quickly become 'her'.

Adrian Mole's diaries will be revered for centuries to come just like those of Samuel Pepys ;-)

A lot of people these days don't read the classics, and so not sure connotations re Pandora's box will be known. Remember that she released not just evil, but also Hope. I like the name. Dora is also a good nn.

I'm not horsey and I have a Pandora! Haven't come across any others (though that could be down to not mixing with horsey types) and I'd say it gets a good reception 90% of the time. We chose it in part because there are a lot of abbreviations, we call her Panda or Pandy right now (cute on a 7 month old) but there is scope for Pan or Dora as she gets older. Go for it if you love it! People always bring associations to a name so the main thing should be that you love it.

Also, the negative classical connotations thing doesn't wash with me considering the negative biblical connotations that could be associated with Eve and the number or Eve's you find...

The charm bracelet connection put me off this name when I was trying to think about girl's names.

I don't think that the classical Pandora's Box connotations would be so much of a problem, as Greek mythology isn't really something that people seem to pay much attention to.

I also think of Adrian Mole, I'm afraid. Many, many people will as you can see on this thread.

The meaning of Pandora is lovely though - it means "a gift to all". Would you consider Theodora which means "a gift from god"? Teodora is a pretty variation.

Wasn't there an Adrian Mole single released, Madly in Love with Pandora? Or am I imagining that?
