Kit, Wilfred or Diggory... If you hate all 3, stay away!

Any opinions? Am too tired to be slated if you hate them all! I think we might chicken out and do Diggory as a second name, but dh loves the nn Digger and we know a Diggory, so it probably seems less unusual to us than it might do to others!

Wilfred always reminds me of Wilfred Owen and for that I reason I see it as being a very sad name.

I like Kit short for Kester and I love Diggory too. Wilf(red) is nice but In think it will be difficult to carry off.

Have not heard of Diggory before but love it!

Not keen in Kit, but a friend of mime has a little Wilf and I like that too.

Diggory was a comedy/buffoon character on Coronation Street a while back.

And as much as you might hope to influence a nickname it doesn't often work out like that. What if the kids at school call him Gorry instead of Digger? And that's the one he'll go with, the one that his friends call him. We absolutely refused to recognise one nickname for DS's name when he was little. Guess what all his mates now call him? He's long since grown up but that's how he's known to all his pals.

I really really like Christopher (or Kester) nn Kit. Wilfred is fine but I keep coming across small Wilfs. Diggory is nice but personally I'd find it hard to separate from The Magician's Nephew .

Of course, because of your title, you're not really going to get the opinions of a cross section of society.
Not sure the point of asking an opinion, if only positive opinions are allowed. I know you are asking for an 'order' rather than a direct 'do you like' but it's only going to be from a small % of posters because of your title.

I knew someone whose knickname was digger, his real name was David.

Kit & Wilf. Not keen on Diggory (it makes me think of didgeridoo) but it's not up to me.

  1. Just no to Wilfred. My second cousin is called Wilfred, He's in his 70s and it still doesn't suit him. He's still young and fun and well Wilfred just isn't. To me it's a name that should be left to the past. Like Athelstan, Godwine or Godefryd.
  1. Kit- it sounds like a nickname for another name. And if he hates it when he's grown up he's got nowhere to go with it. He might change his name by deed poll to Simon/Gordon/Gervaise/Bernard.
  1. Diggory. Just no. You can call him Alphonse and give him the nickname Digger. Never give your DC a name that you think the nickname will be a base for. It will always backfire as his mates will be far more inventive than you. And whatever surname you put Diggory with, he will always sound like a Victorian mill owner.

I love all three although I do know a rottie by the name Wilf. A soft and handsome creature he is though.

I love Kit as a nickname for Christian.

And I wanted Diggory but DH didn't.

I like Kit, I can imagine both child and man as Kit.

Wilfred, bit old mannie in a flat cap for my taste, but Freddie is fine.

Diggory. Hmm. First thought was "wasn't it Cedric Diggory who got killed in Harry Potter?" Maybe if you don't want constant HP references, and I'm sure those books will still be popular when your Ds is older, best avoid?

You can still use nickname Digger and name him anything at all!! I have a couple of family members whose NN bear no resemblance whatsoever to their given names, they came from funny events/circumstances when they were younger. One of my friends kids first words was "digger" btw so you could use something like that as a cover story for coming up with the NN!
