Clement vs Louie

That's it really.. We both love them both. I am a bit scared to use Clement as I love it written down but am not used to saying it out loud. And much as I don't want to care what other people think, I just do. So this is a trial run. Will invariably baby-ise it to Clemmy I suppose.. And that's a bit girly.

Sigh.

I much prefer Clement - such a strong, elegant classic name! And not as overused/trendy as Louie. Great choice!

I think Clem is a cool nickname, reminds me of the drummer from Blondie. Clement though is a bit of a Cecil/Cyril/Algernon type name. I couldn't do it.

I love Louis though.

Clement. I know an adult Clement, who gets called Clem.

A Louie would have to join a long line of child Louies, certainly round here.

Louie is a normal derivation of Louis, at least in french. I would pronounce louie loo-ee 2 (syllable) and louis looee (1 syllable)

It really makes my teeth itch spelt Louie. I have a Louis obviously Blush but he is a teenager now and no-one else in his year is called it Confused
I am obviously a Louie fascist and I shouldn't be taken any notice of

Clement. I know a lovely 11 year old. No need to shorten but Clem is a great nickname.

I'm not that keen on Louie. I do, however, think the spelling makes the pronunciation very clear (Lou-ee). The problem with Louis is that many non French speakers pronounce it Lou-is.

Don't like Louie as it starts with LOO Grin.

Clement is lovely.

I'm not a fan of Louis ignoring Louie spelling,too awful but then I'm a Louise,and although I was never actually bullied for it,the LOO part has been pointed out many times (by adults mainly Hmm ) and I get called Lou a lot. (I don't think the added insult of the wee's at the end of my name helps with the latrine assosiations tbh)
I don't understand why anyone would want to name their child after a toilet...

But then I may be biased,I really do hate my name.

Clement. Clem is fab.

Louie is not too bad spelling wise compared to the Luay I know.

Louie is such a weak sounding name in comparison and I agree about the loo and wee combo not being the greatest. Louis/Lewis pronounced Loo-is might be better but I still much prefer Clement.

Thanks all.. will give Louie a miss then considering the uproar. Still not 100% sure that Clem's the one but registering on Tuesday so got a couple of days up our sleeves!

Would you not go for Louis instead and still pronounce it Lou-ee? Don't really like Clement, sorry! I do like some 'old man' type names- Stanley, Arthur, Sidney, for example. But to me Clement would go alongside names like Norris, which I'm not too keen on.

My boy is Clem(ent) and there isn't a day when I'm not glad I used it. People love it, there is no one else round here with it, whereas there are plenty of Louie's/ Louis'. It does feel a bit scary to begin with - the midwives and maternity staff all seemed very perplexed, but it is such a lovely name!

Aw that's lovely Niffernaffer.. was a little unsure with first baby's name but that all ended well and so happy you can say the same too.
Maybe I'm convinced!

Clem is fab, but I agree with you that Clement might not roll off the tongue aloud. You need to be confident to scream this name like a banshee call the name aloud across a crowded park, for example. My kids have fairly unusual names (particularly DS1) and sometimes I find myself embarrassed to be hollering it yet again.

What on earth is embarassing about 'hollering out an unusual name'? As long as it isn't Poopoohead or Willy, why would it feel awkward?!

Worse is, in my opinion, calling out Jack or Charlie and having at least 3 little ones looking at you.

My DH loves Clement, but I vetoed it this time round... But I do think it's got a cool ring to it. And Clement Attlee was ace.

In case anyone cares.. DP went right off Clement just as I became certain it was the one. So we cancelled our appointment and slept on it right til the last minute. And he became Amos!
