I like strong-sounding unfussy names for girls. I love both of these but need more of a shortlist. Any thoughts? Are these two the right side of 'try hard?'

Chocolate flavoured washing powder

I wouldn't use Coco unless you go round in posher circles. Very chic if you can project Coco Chanel but Id be nervous of my child being called Coco the Clown or Coconut at their very ordinary school.

squoosh · 29/05/2013 16:03

I think Coco has gone mainstream now. A small person called Coco has probably walked down your street today.

JenaiMorris · 29/05/2013 16:11

Lux is a rockstar name. I like it, although I don't think I'd use it.

Ummmmmm, Yola? Short for Yolanda? Yolanda is what I'd call a daughter (not that I'm ever having one). It might be a bit frou frou for you, but Yola is cool.

As long as everyone forgets YOLO I suppose.

I like Coco too.

The Cramps

Said it was cool. Although I somehow doubt he was actually Christened that though.

Beau for a girl is a bit baffling - I've heard of a few boy ones but for a girl? Why do people do it? It's a nice word, and a cute name. Hohum.

bootsycollins · 29/05/2013 16:31

Greta
Olive

I love Wren, would make a cool middle name too.

bootsycollins · 29/05/2013 16:33

I know it's not short but Trinity.

TheCraicDealer · 29/05/2013 16:43

Scout would be cool- think of To Kill A Mockingbird and the tomboy narrator!

Love Noor, although in my head she'd have swarthy skin and gorgeous dark curls, so unless I marry a sheik I'll never get to use it. Same with Paloma.

There was a little girl called Het on Child of Our Time, although that might get some odd looks. Fwiw I like Quinn and Wren as well, and I'm pretty staid when it comes to names.

Lebkuchenlover · 29/05/2013 17:35

Quinn is a boys name to my ears - I know 2 boys named this, one short for Quentin. To me it sounds masculine, like Finn.

Lux sounds like short for Luxembourg and not at all feminine, sorry.

I wonder why so many boys names are being used for girls - I know of a girl Elliot, a Jude and a Charlie. Why? There are so many lovely, beautiful girls' names out there....!?

ShadowStorm · 29/05/2013 20:34

The only Quinn's I've met have been men, so it doesn't sound like a girl's name at all to me.

And Lux is a brand of soap. Like Imperial Leather or Pears.

I too love Lux.

Love the Greer suggestion.

Liv?

BlueBowTie · 29/05/2013 21:31

Lux is nice but is IMO very reminiscent of the virgin suicides which is a link you might not want to bring up? I like Linnet, Esme, Estelle, Lyra, Cordelia and Mirabelle as unusual girls names.

raisah · 29/05/2013 22:01

Lux is a soap brand so maybe not

Vida
Mimi
Anya

AmIGoingMad · 29/05/2013 22:06

I like Quinn for a girl. I'm a one tree hill fan so I associate that as being a girls name. I'm surprised that others don't but that could just be me!
Not too keen on Lux personally but if you like it you should go with it!

Foosyerdoos · 29/05/2013 22:06

How about Praxis?

Quinn is probably popular in the US because of Quinn who was a character Glee, it's short for Quinnifer
