Is Ava TOO popular?

CrimsonRed · 13/03/2013 10:48

My husband and I only have one name we both like for our little girl... Ava.

Only problem is it seems to be very popular in the last 5 - 10yrs, not only in the UK - but US and Australia.

We don't know any Avas at all.

Do you think it's too popular to use? Also what is a good middle name with Ava? My husband like Ava Elizabeth, but I don't...

TIA :)

I like ava :) don't know any ava's! Ava Elizabeth goes really nicely !!

HollyGoHeavily · 13/03/2013 10:58

I know a lot of little Ava's - it's a beautiful, classic name :)

grabaspoon · 13/03/2013 10:59

I know 1 ava aged 21

Babybeesmama · 13/03/2013 11:01

I like Ava, but it is quite popular. If our DS had been a girl he would've been aoife, love that name x

ConfuzzledMummy · 13/03/2013 11:02

My daughter is Ava Mae :-)

I'm not that keen on Elizabeth as the middle name, as my husband's best friend's daughter is Elizabeth...

I think his wife will be unhappy if we use it. I suppose I could always ask her...

I only know one, she's 8.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 13/03/2013 11:24

My DD is nearly two and there are Avas in many baby groups and her nursery. But nothing wrong with having a popular name is there? (DD has a very popular name).

CrimsonRed · 13/03/2013 11:35

I'm not sure... I grew up with a unusual name. I had a love hate relationship with it, but in the end - I quiet like it.

My oldest daughter has an old fashioned name, but it's not in the 'most popular range'.

I like names that are strong and not too prissy sounding...

Other names we like are Olivia (too popular) and Ivy (my Dh likes this one more than me). But we don't like either as much as Ava.

My DH doesn't like the variations of Ava either (Avery, Avy, etc).

Avalon

BigSpork · 13/03/2013 11:57

What is popular is very regional - don't know any Avas here (the only thing close are a couple of fictional Avaline/Avelines in popular stories) but there are a lot of Scarletts. My kids have varying degrees of popularity (Most popular is always in the top 30, least popular won't have 30 kids named total for 5+ years of naming) and it hasn't made much of a difference. Go with what you like - Ava is a very strong name.

What do people think of Vienna? DH just threw it out there...

Too trendy sounding or ok? (Afterall I'm not a celebrity. LOL)

Ultravox and Rigsby's cat :)

besides which, people will make assumptions Grin

MidnightMasquerader · 14/03/2013 18:04

Ava is a lovely name, but will undoubtedly sound very dated in a few years' time due to its popularity.

Vienna is the name of a city. As a person's name it lacks substance, IMO.

PuffPants · 14/03/2013 18:06

Very popular, Mylene Klass started it!

Of course, you should call your child a name you love.

LillianGish · 14/03/2013 18:07

It means nothing to me

MidnightMasquerader · 14/03/2013 19:01

Myleene Klass picked up on it in the middle of the zeitgeist; she didn't start it!

hufflepup · 14/03/2013 19:16

I like it, it's really pretty. Who cares if it's popular at the moment. Go for it

frutilla · 14/03/2013 19:33

This site says it's number 11 on the popularity list... names.darkgreener.com/#ava

SilentMammoth · 14/03/2013 19:35

Yes popular, but absolutely lovely too!

PuffPants · 14/03/2013 19:36

Ok, maybe she didn't start it as a worldwide trend but it was the first time I'd heard it used (in recent times - I know she didn't invent it!) and I think celebs massively influence people in things like baby names. It seemed to me that the name popped up everywhere AFTER her daughter was born, not before.

SilentMammoth · 14/03/2013 19:36

Vienna, otoh, atrocious. As a name that is. As a mini break destination it's delightful.

sandberry · 14/03/2013 19:51

Ava is definitely popular and not just popular but trendy it will date. It seems to be the next name in the Ellie-Evie trend (look how dated Ellie already seems and that is what Ava will be like in 10 years). However it is a great name and I don't think popularity is a problem really with names. Why does everyone need an unusual name?

I predict Ada will be the next in the trend along with Alice (they are just coming through) so might be alternatives.
