I knew a lulu and her name was Louise.

Beehatch · 04/03/2013 09:43

Tallulah? The one I know is Lula though

LuluLovesYou · 04/03/2013 09:45

I like Lucy and Tallulah from the suggestions so far. Unfortunately my dh won't let me have Tallulah (though he may be open to persuasion) and Lucy while I like it is a bit too safe! Thanks for the responses, keep em coming!!!

Lulu is an Arabic name in it's own right and it means pearl. I wanted to name my dd but my entire family were against me! Mainly because of Lulu the singer & that song.

LuluLovesYou · 04/03/2013 09:53

Raisah I am getting to the point where I am very tempted to just put Lulu on the birth cert....would that be terrible??

My sister is Laura and she normally gets called Lulu or Lu. It doesn't feel like a 'rea' name of its own accord though?

olivertheoctopus · 04/03/2013 10:00

PS And my parents' cat is Talullah, referred to as Lullah.

MolotovCocktail · 04/03/2013 10:02

Lulu is a lovely name - why would it be terrible to name her Lulu on the bc?

If it were me, I would go for Louise or Louisa/Luisa on the bc: I like the names very much and it would be nice for Lulu to have a more 'serious' option for a name (Lulu is very soft-sounding) should she wish in th future.

BeeBopDingALing · 04/03/2013 10:04

Lulu is a name, like a previous poster says it means pearl. I know a Lulu and she is just Lulu. I say go for it, just make sure you have an option of middle name(s) so she has choice as she gets older.

raisah · 04/03/2013 10:14

Lululovesyou - not terrible at all. Lulu is the Arabic word for pearl & lots of people use it as a girls name. Lots of cross cultural names around nowadays & lots of Hebrew / Biblical names have made it to the English language without people thinking that they are different or 'foreign'. Arabic names that are now mainstream:
Zara -flower
Layla - night
Zahaara
Suzanne
Shani
Aisha/Ayesha
Amina
Nina
Tanya

Boys
Idris
Mikhail
Zakariah
Danyaal
Yakoub (Jacob)

Lucina

VinegarDrinker · 04/03/2013 10:19

We have a Lulu in the family who is just Lulu.

Gimmeechocolate · 04/03/2013 10:32

Luella?

Saundy · 04/03/2013 10:40

I also LOVE the name Lulu but in the back of my mind 2 things stop me, firstly some people do use it as a slang term for ahem lady parts & secondly I can still hear Wayne & Waynetta slob saying it (for those who remember Harry Enfield in his prime).

CheeseStrawWars · 04/03/2013 10:43

I have a feeling I have seen Lulu crop up on those threads about "what word do you use for your DD's genitals...".

corkythecat · 04/03/2013 10:46

There is a little girl in DS1's class who goes by the name Lulu, her "real" name is Alanah.
If you like Lulu, go with Lulu. No need for a formal name if you never intend to call her by that name.

livealoha · 04/03/2013 10:46

Lucinda Smile

clarehk · 04/03/2013 11:02

I love Lulu too, but would go with Luisa which is also lovely IMO. Would have had Luisa myself for imminent Dc2 but my sister is Louise and didnt want to offend my other sisters by naming DD after eldest sis!

LuluLovesYou · 04/03/2013 11:07

Thank you so much for the advice so far, I may go for just Lulu....though my dm is totally against it. I also thought Luna may be an option for the BC?

"No need for a formal name if you never intend to call her by that name"

The point missed is that it's going to be her name, not yours, and she deserves a proper name, not just a nickname. I see the argument that it's an Arabic name, but it is also a well-established Western nn and diminutive - so unless you have some Arabic background, it will be perceived as the latter.

There are some lovely names that naturally shorten to Lulu, so what's wrong with giving her one of those? I would cringe if my given name was Lulu. I would tolerate it as a nn but would far rather be a Lucy, Louise or Louisa. They are all names that suit any age and will fit in anywhere.

Floralnomad · 04/03/2013 12:37

My sister went to school with twins called Lorinda and Dorinda and they were known as Lulu and Dodo .

LuluLovesYou · 04/03/2013 12:40

Floralnomad oh gosh.....I don't think Lorinda will be going on he list Grin

OP posts:
Floralnomad · 04/03/2013 12:52

No I agree its bloody awful but it did answer the original question . Don't go a bundle on Dorinda either , having said that I think the parents were Italian so maybe it sounds better with an accent .
