My hubby is icelandic, and we have a really boring British surname. We have agreed to give our kids icelandic names so that they arn't called John Smith.

Being a school teacher I have been a little grumpy and ruled out any names that I can't pronounce correctlty by reading them and any with non English characters (ð etc)

We have a son called Ragnar and a yellow bump, pretty set on Lilja for a girl, but would love some suggestions for boys (and girls too), been thinking about Ólafur for a boy but if we shorten the names our boys would be raggi and oli (rags and holes) am I over thinking this???

Magnus?
Erik?
Freya?
Erika?
Inga/Ingrid?

(I know three scottish females called Ola). Wouldn't that be a more obvious abbreviation of Olafur? (trying to be helpful emoticon).

FWIW, I do think you're overthinking the raggy/holey thing :)

Loki (norse god of mischief) for boy
Mia for girl

Rhubarbgarden · 19/02/2013 13:56

Helgi or Hedda

Agree with chocoluvva about overthinking raggy/holey thing

Erik or Magnus for boys would work very well in English if you are worried about pronunciation issues. I like both names very much. Freyja for a girl

In fact, Magnus is on my shortlist for my due-in-a-week yellow bump (we're Scottish) if it's a boy.

Halla, or there was a thread a while back about the name Lillimor (not totally sure of spelling) for a girl, which is apparently Norse in origin and verey lovely
Arne

I like Aksel and Viggo for a boy. Svandis for a girl.

Astrid was on our list for DD2, lovely name - I went to school with an Icelandic girl called Stanen, which I always thought was very pretty.

sausageandorangepickle · 21/02/2013 22:01

When I was at Uni I knew a girl named Smilla (like the book 'miss smilla's feeling for snow') and she was always called Smile by everyone - lovely! I also love Erika or Ingrid - and is Pippi (Longstocking) scandinavian?

Sashapineapple · 21/02/2013 22:39

Can only think boys, either Soren or Lars.

schroedingersdodo · 21/02/2013 23:00

Lars and Viggo are great. Too bad I had no excuse to use such names as I'm from nowhere near Scandinavia...

RedRobin1 · 21/02/2013 23:05

Linnea for a girl

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 21/02/2013 23:07

I have an Eirik.

I think Viktor is a great name as well.

Lyftiduft · 21/02/2013 23:23

I also think you're overthinking Raggi and Oli :)

I've taught a Lars and Nils (British but some Scandi heritage).

Inga? I like Lilja a lot.

My dd's godfather is Icelandic, his name is Ingvar (which I love) his kids are called Christian (spelt Islandic way which I can't remember!) Katerina and Johannes (Yo-hannes) they live in the US so all the names have worked in an English speaking context. Ingvar is still my favorite - awesome name and awesome bloke!

haggisaggis · 25/02/2013 13:03

Anders, Lars, Thor are 3 I like (and ds is one of them!)

NoRoomForMeInMyBed · 25/02/2013 16:00

DS2 is Magnus, people always comment on it and it never gets shortened. It suits him perfectly...I love your choice of names OP, love Lilja!

serin · 25/02/2013 23:04

Tuuli for a girl (Too Lee)

Lars for a boy

FatJasper · 25/02/2013 23:13
