I love this name. DH said it sounds made up (he's English, I'm Scottish).

Thoughts?

I'm Scottish and have heard about 2-3 people in my life called Struan.

Unfortunately though it makes me think of something you do when you poo. Blush. I probably shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion for things like this...

plentyofgrowingroom · 08/02/2013 17:10

I bet that wasn't the response OP was expecting Grin I'm Scottish too and I quite like it - no poo associations for me at all!

Are good, not top 10 Scottish boy names.

If you go on the general registry office Scotland website you can get the list of all boy names registered by year :) if you are into Scottish names this may help.

Greensleeves · 08/02/2013 17:15

There's a MNer with a little Struan :)

I think it's adorable personally. Unusual in a good way.

LemonBreeland · 08/02/2013 17:17

I live in Scotland and know 3 Struans, quite young boys.

emacp · 08/02/2013 17:18

Struan Stevenson MEP is the only one I've heard of!

blueberryboybait · 08/02/2013 17:19

I'm not Scottish and know a couple also know 2 Stroan's, which English Dh says is better Hmm

MechanicalTheatre · 08/02/2013 17:22

I am Scottish and I've never heard it.

It makes me think of things being strewn around.

WowOoo · 08/02/2013 17:23

I think it's not so nice, sorry. Honest opinion from a Welsh person who lives in England.

I can't help thinking of 'Strain'. Onomatopoeia (sp??) So.... effort, trying too hard. Not necessarily bad things.....I could change my mind. I think I have - I think it's a person who does their best, so good!

MissAnnersley · 08/02/2013 17:26

I love the name Struan and know two. Definitely not made up.

scarlettsmummy2 · 08/02/2013 17:27

Love it! Know one who is five and one in his fifties!

BalloonSlayer · 08/02/2013 17:29

It reminds me of "Struth"

I can imagine it being a good name for an irritating child, so that you wouldn't have to shout in an exasperated fashion: "Struth, Johnny!!" you could just shout "Struan!!"

storytopper · 08/02/2013 17:29

I am in Scotland, have heard of a few Struans and love it. Not too common yet. Better choice than the very popular Cameron, Calum, Finlay or Euan.

HyvaPaiva · 08/02/2013 17:29

I'm Scottish, I know one Struan who is 30. I like it Smile

emacp · 08/02/2013 17:32

I've just been told that the Gaelic word 'sruthan', which has the same pronunciation as Struan, is the Gaelic word for streamlet or rivulet. I presume this name Struan is derived from this Gaelic word.

NowPlayingZone · 08/02/2013 17:35

Not keen. Maybe it sounds nicer with a Scottish accent?

CheerfulYank · 08/02/2013 17:37

I only know of it because of the MNer who has one, but I like it a lot. :)

Limelight · 08/02/2013 17:43

I was friends with one at Uni. He was unbelievably 'cool' and so I guess I think his name by association is too!

BonaDea · 08/02/2013 17:51

Hmmm, bit of a mixed reaction which is what I feared!

Quite like Cameron and it's not too popular down here south of the border. Although, of course, there is always the risk that people think we named him for mega-head David. Wink

Struan is a traditional name for my family/clan - but my OH didn't like it.

We went with Craig but he was almost Gregor. Younger son is Ciar (Keir).

Also like Grant, Innes, Kerr & Callum.

Bunbaker · 08/02/2013 17:58

I quite like it. Is it pronounced as it is written - Strewan?

amck5700 · 08/02/2013 18:00

yes bunbaker - but with a proper scottish rrrr :o

In my accent it goes Strrru-in - but vowels in Scotland are pretty interchangeable!

lollystix · 08/02/2013 18:04

Like -could do it as I have Euan (and a CallumBlush)

lollystix · 08/02/2013 18:05

Oops meant couldn't - Struan and Euan not so great
