Ocean-Melody

... came across this name in a children's magazine. It is an actual child's name.

Whilst I would prefer to remain objective, open-minded and, well, cool with what others choose for their kids' names, I was left thinking 'WTF?!?!' with this one.

Ocean could be a name that works well on a child, be it a boy or girl; Melody would work on a girl, too. But as a combination? Hmmm ...

I think its beautiful.

Pleeeaaase don't tell me I'm the only one who thinks it's slightly ridiculous ...

I don't like the hyphenated bit. the two together are too much of a clunky mouthful. I was horrified the first time I heard Ocean as a girl's name, but I'm getting used to it now. I can't say I like it though. Melody is quite pretty but I would never use it myself.

Mrsrobertduvall · 03/02/2013 20:16

Awful.
I hate hyphenated names anyway.

Cakethrow · 03/02/2013 20:17

Sounds like a fisher price cot mobile.

MidnightMasquerader · 03/02/2013 20:23

Oh thank goodness - I thought you were coming on to get our opinions on it, and I was worrying how the thread would go, and what some of the more vociferous posters might have to say...! Grin

coffeeinbed · 03/02/2013 20:26

For a dolphin.
Maybe..

OneHundredSecondsofSolitude · 03/02/2013 20:28

It's what pammie and the hoff would call their love child

MolotovCocktail · 03/02/2013 20:30

I feel a bit guilty because this is a real little girl's name, after all. I can see the sweet intentions that may have driven the name choice: Ocean and Melody and good enough as first names on their own.

But I'm really Confused how Ocean-Melody would work in reality.
It's too wordy and a bit silly when said aloud together, IMHO.

It sounds like the parents were Dr Who fans and looking for a variation of "River Song".

usualsuspect · 03/02/2013 20:33

It's quite pretty.

gillian88 · 03/02/2013 20:36

I know a Melody-Love Blush

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 04/02/2013 07:37

It's not to my taste, put it that way.

12ylnon · 04/02/2013 10:04

Agree with coffee i'm afraid.
I'm sorry, it just reminds me of that woman on real housewives of NYC that called her girls Sea and Teddy (Thaddeus). It also sounds an awful like 'river song' (Melody Pond) from dr who. Not a fan i'm afraid.
Melody on it's own is lovely though.

Backinthebox · 04/02/2013 10:09

My 5 year old daughter has a boy called Ocean in her class at school. She came home one day and said 'Ocean - that's not a proper name is it? It's just the sea.'

Combined with Melody, it's leaving the poor child open to all kinds of stick later on.

pepperrabbit · 04/02/2013 10:09

The trouble is it only sounds pretty and cute on a small pretty and cute girl.
But a grown woman? No chance of gravitas with hypens! Please.
Actually it reminds me of a poncey paint name, maybe a soft blue with hints of aqua.

shoobidoo · 04/02/2013 11:14

'Ocean - that's not a proper name is it? It's just the sea.'

But lots of names are also nouns (e.g. Miles, Mark, Willow, Rose, Lily, Bear, Tiger etc) and kids are pretty accepting of most names.

I don't mind Ocean but personally wouldn't hyphenate it with Melody. But I certainly wouldn't think 'WTF?!!'. It's just a name.

Leorapoy · 05/02/2013 04:38

I once knew of a family that called all 5 of their daughters Ocean-related names.

Ocean (of course)
Coral
Pearl
Marina
(and finally) Sandy.

I think they were starting to scrape the barrel with the last one.

I will never understand silly things like this!

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 05/02/2013 04:42

Would not look good on a CV.

shoobidoo · 05/02/2013 11:14

Depending what else was on her CV!

ErikNorseman · 05/02/2013 11:15

Ridiculous. I totally judge people who hyphenate names, even more so when they aren't even proper names.

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 05/02/2013 15:15

Good point Shoo.

LexyMa · 05/02/2013 15:18

And over on the right hand side of this page I see in 'Mumsnet latest'... "Opal Moonbaby is our children's chapter book of the month."

Opal-moonbaby. It's on my list, it surely doodley is!

iseenodust · 05/02/2013 15:19

Queues behind Erik.

meditrina · 05/02/2013 15:28

I thought it was a Doctor Who inspired name (another version of River Song an Melody Pond, but just a bit wetter).
