Calliope

What're your thoughts on Calliope?? (one of the muses is greek mythology, muse of epic poetry if I'm not mistaken)

I like it pronounced "Cal-eye-oh-pee" but others have suggested that most people would say it like "Cal-ee-ope".

Is it a bit too pretentious and "out there"?

not for me, perhaps as a second name if you love it so much

FaceLikeAPickledOnion · 14/01/2013 16:37

sounds too much like Karaoke,
So many pg hormones going a bit crazy atm. Reading some utterly daft name suggestions lately.

VivaLeBeaver · 14/01/2013 16:38

I'd say Cally-ope. Not keen.

ExitPursuedByABear · 14/01/2013 16:40

I like it, but usually people pop up saying it sounds liker callipers.

AgathaTrunchbull · 14/01/2013 17:14

Sounds nothing like karaoke! Lovely name and perfectly easy to pronounce. If people can cope with Penelope, Athene, Chloe or Persephone, there's no reason they can't cope with Calliope.

Good choice out of the Muses, as well! Much better than Terpsichore! Grin

GlaikitFizzog · 14/01/2013 17:16

I like callie as a nn, but its one of those names I never knew how to pronounce until I came on MN. Like Persephone!

When I was under I wanted a baby girl called Callie, but her real name would be Caledonia Hmm

CheeseStrawWars · 14/01/2013 17:18

I'd have pronounced it "Cal-ee-oh-pee".

Masterchuff · 14/01/2013 17:19

I think of the character from Greys and as she's my favourite I love it! Shortened to Cally though can you live with that?

CheeseStrawWars · 14/01/2013 17:21

Did you know it's a musical instrument too? Air-driven calliope or steam calliope.Calliope in that sense is "cal-ee-ope".

thegreylady · 14/01/2013 17:23

cal-ee-ope-ee

CheeseStrawWars · 14/01/2013 17:26

Calista?

LedaOfSparta · 14/01/2013 17:29

Love it, but then DD is called Xanthe so I have form for difficult pronunciation!Grin

LimeLeafLizard · 14/01/2013 17:30

I'd have pronounced it cal-ee-ope-ee, too. Cally is sweet, I had a school friend called that (for Caroline).

I think it is a nice name, very pretty, but I wouldn't use it as a first name because I would worry that people would think I was being pretentious, and that many people would pronounce / spell it wrongly.

Sephy · 14/01/2013 17:30

Greys anatomy to me too - love it!

AgathaTrunchbull · 14/01/2013 17:33

Leda We think similarly! Smile I have Xanthe lined up for a later sprog, if we have one!

Viviennemary · 14/01/2013 17:38

Strangely enough I quite like it though I don't usually like those unusual names. I think most people would pronounce it cally ope. But not sure I would use such an unusual name.

alexpolismum · 14/01/2013 17:59

It's my MIL's name. But her nickname is Poppy!

I don't mind it as a name, but I don't love it.

She pronounces it Call-ee-OH-pee.

Anonymumous · 14/01/2013 18:57

Call-ee-oh-pee here too. And it does make me think of callipers - sorry. Blush I like out-there names though - much more interesting than yet another Grace or Ellie!

Have you considered Calanthe or Calanthea? It means 'beautiful blossom'. I love it, but DH was unimpressed last time round. Sad

MidnightMasquerader · 14/01/2013 19:18

I think it's lovely - I love the way many Greek names sound, almost musical and lilting. Callie is also a delightful nickname for a little one.

I probably wouldn't choose it, though...! The pronunciation issue would end up pissing me - and eventually my DD - off too much! My own DD has a name which can be pronounced one of three ways. We fully knew this when we named her and it doesn't bother me when people don't get it 'right'. I mean, how are they to know? But something like this - when there actually is a correct pronunciation but people get it wrong would wind me up no end. Grin

TidyDancer · 14/01/2013 20:01

Eek no, it's not for me I'm afraid.

I'm with the pronunciation of Call-ee-oh-pee.

LadyMedea · 14/01/2013 22:12

Greys anatomy rocks... Go for it

HavingALittleFaithBaby · 14/01/2013 22:37

I like it. I was at uni with a Greek girl by that name - age was with a K I think...pronounced Cal-ee-oh-pee. Will have to get used to spelling it out though so I hope you have an easy to spell surname?

OrangeLily · 14/01/2013 22:45

I would think Grey's but I like it a lot!

Lastofthepodpeople · 19/01/2013 07:45

I really like it. It was on my shortlist but we ended up having a DS

AThingInYourLife · 19/01/2013 07:51

I love it.

Call-ee-ope-ee to me.
