Is Alex a boy or girl name?

I'm pregnant with a boy and LOVE the name Alex (short for Alejandro) but my husband has vetoed it saying it's a girl's name! Is it? Really?

It's unisex however most Alex I know are boys

Bakingtins · 13/12/2012 19:15

Short for both Alexander or Alexandra (I guess Alejandro is a Spanish variation?). I would assume an Alex could be either sex.

StNickHasHisXmasTeakozyOn · 13/12/2012 19:15

Alexander/Alexandra. 'Tis unisex innit.

7to25 · 13/12/2012 19:16

I would say both but in Scotland definately a boys name.
Please tell your husband to write to Govan's finest export and tell him he has a girl's name!

survivingwinter · 13/12/2012 19:17

I would automatically assume Alex was a boy but do know a few female Alex's. Much more popular for a boy though.

scaevola · 13/12/2012 19:19

It's a completely unisex nn.

Pizzaexpress2 · 13/12/2012 19:21

Unisex but my Alex is a boy. Mostly boy Alex's at school here.

RPosieB · 13/12/2012 19:21

That's what I thought!! Bakingtins we live in Spain so wanted a Spanish hint.... Am definitely thinking of taking your advice 7to25 and rounding up the most manly Alex's I can find so hubby can tell them they're girlie! Ha! I also like Charlie, but not sure it's a great name for a grown up? Or Javi (pronounced havi, more or less). Any opinions?

TidyDancer · 13/12/2012 19:23

Alex is a definitely unisex name, but IME it's predominantly female.

Lovely name though. Xmas Smile

Not keen on Javi, Charlie is okay, but I would use Charles as the full name.

Bakingtins · 13/12/2012 19:44

Javi/havi is likely to become "Chavvy" if you venture to the UK.

MolotovCocktail · 13/12/2012 20:39

In my mind, I would assume Alex is a boy but I know plenty of female Alex's. It's a truly unisex NN.

SomersetONeil · 13/12/2012 21:02

I would assume an Alex was a boy, but it is equally a girls' name - Alexander/Alesandra, respectively.

Javi is a gorgeous nickname, but likewise, I'd warn against it in the UK due to it sounding just a bit to much like the c-word...

Oh, and Alex blows Charlie out of the water.

SomersetONeil · 13/12/2012 21:03

Oh right, Javi is an actual name; not a nickname. I wouldn't recommend, if planning to spend time in the UK or other countries where the word chav has spread and is widely recognised.

shoobidoo · 13/12/2012 21:13

I know more females names Alex, short for Alexandra. But I suppose it is unisex.

Javi is lovely but only if pronounced Havi (not J-avi).

Pendipidy · 13/12/2012 21:36

i knew someone who called their first child, a girl, Alexandra and then their second , a boy , Alexander! they ended up with nicknames of girl Sandra and boy Alex. very odd ! Shock

shoobidoo · 13/12/2012 22:32

Alexandra and Alexander - really Shock?!

RPosieB · 14/12/2012 09:51

Alexander and Alexandra? Seriously? I have an Olivia and love the name Oliver but SO wouldn't!!
Somerset I was madly trying to work out how Javi was like the C word (as in C U Next Tuesday...) till I realised you meant chav! Doh!!
Javi would usually be short for Javier. Funnily enough it's often pronounced Chavvy in Northern Spain but fortunately we live in the South so he would definitely be a 'Havi'.

Definitely no plans to move back to the UK so Javi is still the favourite......

Both. I know both female and male Alexes.

cece · 15/12/2012 11:35

Can be eother sex but to me I automatically think of a girl first.

GalaxyDisaStar · 15/12/2012 11:39

It is one of the only names I can think of which have no gender association for me. Joe also, but only when spoken as the spelling are different. Maybe Sam for adults, but a child i would assume a boy.

Pendipidy · 15/12/2012 15:08

yup, really. they said they didn't realise of the shortening of name problem! Shock

VBisme · 15/12/2012 15:11

Alexandra is a girl, Alexander is a boy, Alex is a unisex nickname for either.
I think it's lovely.

MadStaringEyes · 15/12/2012 16:40

Unisex, but as mine is male, I think boy.

RyleDup · 15/12/2012 16:57

Both.

wonkylegs · 15/12/2012 17:00

Both

I know both girl & boy Alex's
