Is Alex a boy or girl name?

I'm pregnant with a boy and LOVE the name Alex (short for Alejandro) but my husband has vetoed it saying it's a girl's name! Is it? Really?

Unisex; if you want gender specific variants then Alec for a boy or Alexis for a girl

onthemetro · 15/12/2012 17:02

Both, Alexander/Alexandra as others have said. I know an Alix (who is a girl), I really like that

Chislemum · 15/12/2012 17:29

Definitely both. My brother is Alex(ander), my friend is Alex(andra). It is the prefect name too as it works in so many language. It is my DS's middle name.

Truly unisex

AnnieLobeseder · 15/12/2012 17:33

Unisex. We have a girl Alex, there is a boy Alex in her class and another boy Alex in the village.

I know 4 female and 4 male Alexs, one each under 5, 20s, 30s and 40s. It seems to be a pretty universal name!

SneezySnatcher · 16/12/2012 10:31

It's one of the only 'unisex' names I think work equally well for both genders. I love it for either and it was on both our girl and boy name list!

Startail · 16/12/2012 12:18

I'd think boy, I've only known much older female Alex's.

Charlie's amongst children and Chris's amongst adults are far more confusing. I know loads of adult Christopher's and several Christine's, not one of them ever uses their full name!

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/12/2012 15:06

It's a nickname for both Alexander and Alexandra so it's unisex to me. I knew a few boy and girl Alex's at school.

GimmeIrnBru · 16/12/2012 15:22

I think of it as unisex. Nice name.

AgathaTrunchbull · 16/12/2012 17:40

RPosieB, your husband is nuts, I'm afraid, it's certainly unisex and more male to my mind, because Alexander's a more common name than Alexandra.

What does he think all those Alexanders are shortened down to? It's rarely Xander!

GimmeIrnBru · 16/12/2012 18:46

To be fair, Alexander is more commonly shortened to Alec in Scotland. It isn't the done thing to shorten the name to Alex where I'm from.

Primarily boys

BuntysFestiveCollocks · 17/12/2012 20:12

Both. My son is Alex, short for Alexander. I would say I lean slightly more toward it being male, but I am probably biased.

elsabel · 31/12/2012 22:39

I love Alexandra and Alexander, would consider it for my baby but my nephew is called Alexander. Am jealous of anyone who is still free to use this name!

breatheslowly · 31/12/2012 22:48

Both, but I would generally expect it to be a boy. Absolutely love it.

Hulababy · 31/12/2012 22:54

Either.

I know a few children called Alex - some girls (Alexandra) some boys (Alexander)

mathanxiety · 01/01/2013 04:30

I think of it as a boy name.

For a girl I would use Alix. Of course they sound very alike, but to look at on paper I think Alix looks more feminine.
