Pronounced Arr-yah. If you heard of someone calling their child this name, would you make any assumptions about what her parents were like/ what job they did?

RE the white supremacist business, they actually stole the Aryan thing from the Persian's. 'Iran' actually means "place of Aryan's" or something like that. Weirdly enough.

Persian's are the original 'Aryans' though, so to speak. Certainly wouldn't put me off naming my child Arya, especially with the Game of Thrones making it poplar at the moment.

Frontpaw: My aunt is known as Auntie Fatti Grin short for Fatima of course. Combined with my British great grandmother Nanny Piggy (named due to me being unable to say 'Peggy'), people think I'm taking the piss when I talk about my family Blush

The Nazis stole the swastika from innocent ancient sources as well - doesn't mean it's a sensible thing to wear on a necklace in the UK.

Lady: True.
But the connection is so loose to me RE Arya, especially as most would hear it before seeing it, that it won't put me off one of the few names I can get DP to agree on that I love Wink

I'd think they were frightfully common

I was at school with an Arya. Her parents were both doctors. This was way before GoT though. I think it's a pretty name.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought it was pronounced ar-re-a. I'm sure on game of thrones it's pronounced like that too?

I always thought it was I-ra! And loved that version of it.
Also in the game of thrones (big fan) the girl Arya is a wonderful character so I think a good namesake!! :-)

DD is Arya
Im from India. Arya means "noble"or "the best" in Sanksrit which is where the name originates from and is an old and beautiful name.
Ive never heard of Game of thrones until I saw this thread!! Luckily i dont think anyone i know knows what it is either!
FWIW DH and I are both from oxbridge. DH is an MD and I am a director - in big corporates. Everyone we meet loves our DDns names (god know what they are saying behind our back!)

As long as they aren't saying (as someone said to my sister's face) "XX (her name)?? What a bloody stupid name!".

I always knew my sis had an unusual name, but I thought unusual was quirky, not Baaaad until I came onto Mumsnet!

"I didn't call either DD Pheobe, because of Friends. It was my favourite ever name, from the time I was about 8 or 9 when I read Eight Cousins. "

It's a good job you didn't, since you can't spell it! It's Phoebe.

Arya I just see Are ya? Tis awful.

If you love the name Arya but want to steer clear of the neo nazi connotations why not include an "I", and use the Iranian spelling instead: Ariya. I think it looks prettier written down like this too. And less likely to be pronounced "are yer", as in "who are yer?"

They think of other names!
