Pronounced Arr-yah. If you heard of someone calling their child this name, would you make any assumptions about what her parents were like/ what job they did?

Not sure what their jobs are but it involves crystals, homeopathy, energy fields and tinkling bells

Potters. I think they'd make pots. Ugly cups etc.

I'll give you my honest answer - my first thought would be that they were fascist white supremacists (Aryan). Sorry!

Again, American neo-Nazis stockpiling arms in a mountain hideaway. Sorry...
Ariadne, Ariel, Soraya instead?

But DD (10), who is not allowed to watch GOT funnily enough, says "I'd assume they didn't know much about the Second World War".

DilysPrice · 23/11/2012 18:02

...which I think is sweet of DD, she assumes ignorance rather than Nazism.

Oh, there is an Arya in my DD's year at school in Paris. His father is a professor of mathematics (at Columbia) and his mother is a graphic designer.

Report
Bonsoir · 23/11/2012 19:46

Oh, and both Arya's parents are from the Iranian diaspora.

You do know that the word means noble, truthful, great...yes?
What hitler and co did to the name and its meaning is recent history.
The god who is worshipped on Diwali is called 'arya-putra' or son of the noble one.

The arya I know is the son of a development economist and social scientist.

I think most of us are thinking along those lines, mamattoo: either neo-nazi ('recent history as you call it)or hippy (you do know it means noble, truthful, great .. Yes? Said while waving incense and wearing crystals)
There is also the 'foreign' option. Like bonsoir, the only people I know with similar names are from Iran

Haven't read the thread. I would pronounce it A-ree-yah if I hadn't been told. The parents would be Indian doctors.

Oh yes - and I'd think it was a boy

The father would be called Ned (short for Eddard) and would be the Lord of a castle in the North. The mother would be called Catelyn.
Arya is a strong character and a good role model though.
