Medical Types- when you hear Douglas..

..do you think 'Pouch of Douglas'?
May be overthinking this a little, but DH and I were talking baby names for if we had another DS, and Douglas came up. He loves it, as do I- think it's a lovely strong name.
I'm wondering though, if the anatomical refererence will be an issue (or if his GP will be having a quiet titter to themselves).
Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!

I'm not a medical type so am wondering what a pouch of douglas is?

thenightsky · 18/11/2012 21:33

I just saw thread title and thought.... 'pouch of...'

B1ueberryS0rbet · 18/11/2012 21:33

What's a pouch of Douglas?

I think Doogie is cute. Or do you say Doogie but write Dougie? Anyway. Off to google.

AKissIsNotAContract · 18/11/2012 21:36

Yes I do, but it didn't hold back Doogie Howser MD.

LostInWales · 18/11/2012 21:36

I did but only because you said 'medical types' first. I'm not sure it would spring to mind otherwise.

B1ueberryS0rbet · 18/11/2012 21:36

I've just looked at a diagram and read the explanation and I still don't get it! I won't be ringing in sick with it I don't think. I'll stick with 24 hour bug.

Vivalebeaver · 18/11/2012 21:36

Well I did when I read the thread title but wouldn't if I just met a kid called Douglas.

jenniferlucy17 · 18/11/2012 21:37

I'm a GP & it didn't cross my mind at all- go for it!

Vivalebeaver · 18/11/2012 21:38

It's an extension of the peritoneal cavity.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 18/11/2012 21:40

I saw the 'medical types' and 'Douglas' and thought of George Clooney's character in ER Blush

ggirl · 18/11/2012 21:40

or a picture framers

Blowninonabreeze · 18/11/2012 21:40

Dh and I are both medics and Douglas is currently top of our list if this pregnancy results in a boy.

Pouch of Douglas never been an association until now Grin

MummysHappyPills · 18/11/2012 21:40

Pouch of Douglas is the space in your pelvis between your vagina and your rectum! Grin (for those who don't know)

I am a medical type, and funnily enough it is not the first thing that springs to mind when I here the name Douglas. It does however remind me of my aunt's dog of the same name...

And fwiw before I started studying medicine I had never heard of a pouch of Douglas so I most "lay" people won't think of it! Grin

MummysHappyPills · 18/11/2012 21:42

Hear not here Blush

poppycat04 · 18/11/2012 21:43

It was the first thing I thought.....

MulledWineOnTheBusLady · 18/11/2012 21:46

I love Douglas, I only suggested it on another thread somewhere tonight. Annoyed it has a rude bits association. It's like Melina all over again. Angry

Eves · 18/11/2012 21:46

My son is called Douglas! I hadn't heard of this until now.Has the world been laughing on the inside all this time?!

chocolateicecream · 18/11/2012 21:56

I think that you are safe x.

LostInWales · 18/11/2012 21:56

I am chuckling at that picture framers ggirl do you think they did any research into their name first or are they happy to be associated with the area between the posterior uterus and rectum?

MulledWineOnTheBusLady · 18/11/2012 21:58

Maybe they think it's a landscape feature in Scotland, like the Mull of Kintyre.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 18/11/2012 21:59

Everyone on MN thinks 'of Douglas'. used to be a 'thing' on here... cod-related almost certainly. Grin i think it's a good name, though.

Lancrehotpot · 18/11/2012 22:00

Thanks for your replies
GrinEves It looks like they haven't from the above (except poppycat, who I hope is fibbing!)

Blueberry When I hear 'Doogie' I hear it in the shrill tones of an elderly Scots lady, the kind that uses 'hen' and 'doll' as terms of endearment.

mulledwine Douglas surely not as bad as Melina!

If these medical types don't immediately see the association, I think it might be okay. Not as if the name comes from the area, IYSWIM.

Melina is much, much worse!

MulledWineOnTheBusLady · 18/11/2012 22:06

I like it.

Lancrehotpot · 18/11/2012 22:07

Oh no AitchTwo, just read your post.
Is this something only die-hard old-timer MNetters will get?
