Girls name help

Hi there

We found out yesterday that we are expecting a girl after 3 boys. Totally shocked & unexpected and we have never even looked at girls names before. I had a look in my name book last night and came up with a list but DH has said he doesn't like any of them!!!

Boys are Finn, Milo & Kit. Names I suggested but which have been vetoed are Dora, Mabel, Betsy, Violet, Ottilie & Coco.

I think he would go for Edie but is it really popular now? I think he likes Clemmy but it kind of reminds me of Flemmy - am I being stupid?!

I would love any suggestions. You would have thought it would be easy choosing a first girls name but it's a whole new world to me! Thanks in advance.

I like Edie, short for Edith. Clemmy (Clementine) is nice too. What about-
Pearl
Rosa
Xanthe
Nina
Eliza
Vivienne

littletomato · 26/10/2012 09:58

I think Lois would fit nicely.

MolotovBomb · 26/10/2012 10:01

I like all of your name suggestions apart from Coco and Dora: Coco because it follows clumsily from Kit; Dora because of the kids cartoon.

Pearl, Lola, Heidi, Ella, Hebe (hee-bee) and Nell might go with your boys names. Something funky, yet with a vintage sound is what my feeling is.

Edie is a bit too Granny chic to my ears. Clementine has that modern/retro edge but has perhaps too manu syllables with your boy's names. I'll have a think and come up with some more names [hsmile]

Rosemary, Rosie for short.

pinkpeony4 · 26/10/2012 14:14

Thank you all. I love Pearl but don't think I am brave enough to use it. I also love Lola but one of my best friends has a Lola so can't. I also like Rose but do you think it is a bit dull? I love that it is pretty & classic. I love Nell but my sister wants that for her future child so couldn't use it.

DH has now said he kind of likes Ottilie (nn. Lottie). I love Violet (nn. Letty). He likes Edie but I really don't think I do.

Gosh didn't think it would be this tricky!

Pearl isn't a name that you need to be brave to use; at least, I don't think so. Names like Persephone, Xanthe and Iolanthe need quite brave parents!

Personally, I'm a huge fan of Pearl. I wanted it for my daughters but out surname begins with P, so there were alliteration issues :(

Rose is a classic name, but a little dull compared to your boys names. I think Rosa or Rosalie would be more suitable for the reason that they are funkier.

What a shame for you about Nell! Again, another personal favourite of mine. Maybe speak to your sister and see what she thinks?

Violet is a lovely name and goes well with your sons names. Do keep us posted, an congratulations on your pink pregnancy! xx

StrawWars · 26/10/2012 17:40

I think you have to be a bit brave to go with Pearl, or not care about "pearl necklace" jokes.

MolotovBomb · 26/10/2012 18:04

F*ck, I hadn't thought of the smutty NNs a girl named Pearl could get, particularly in her teen years.

[hsad]

What I love about Pearl is the connotations of preciousness; the vintage yet new, funky sound. It shares the same vibe as Lola, another name I really like. In fact, my DD2s middle name takes inspiration from Pearl. It means 'presious like a pearl'.

Pearl necklace still wouldn't put me off ... Pearl is stunning.

CarriMarie · 26/10/2012 19:33

What about Elodie, could be shortened to Edie ?

pinkpeony4 · 27/10/2012 07:10

Dh now wants Coco. What do you think? I know it does follow on clumsily from Kit but I don't think it's that bad. He also suggested Ada but I think it's a little too old lady for me!

OP posts:
exoticfruits · 27/10/2012 07:18

I think that Coco is dreadful. It lends itself to lots of teasing.
IfIwereaLion has a lovely list.

exoticfruits · 27/10/2012 07:20

I don't like Ada but it is no worse than Pearl, Mabel, Dora etc which are all too old lady.

pinkpeony4 · 27/10/2012 07:26

I can't stop thinking of Coco the clown!!

I think I like Ottilie, he says its too French- what do you think?

OP posts:
SurreyWithAFringeOnTop · 27/10/2012 13:56

I love Ottilie and also love Lottie as a nickname.

What about Lotta? Iris? Greta? All gorgeous.

Plokahontas · 27/10/2012 21:55

What about Meg, Cleo, Dotty or Wren?

pinkpeony4 · 28/10/2012 07:12

I love Lotta, so sweet. Our surname begins with an L but I like alliterations.

I think my favorite at the moment is Ottilie (Lottie/Lotta). Warming to Iris - do you think it sounds a bit harsh? Still loving Violet & last night DH suggested Ida but I think it's a little too old lady.

Still really want Dora but he said he would never agree to that! What about Bibi? Short for something like Beatrice?

Love Nell & Lola but can't use these

As this is my first girl after 3 boys I really want a pretty, feminine name that follows on nicely from my boys. It has actually kept me awake since our scan thinking about it!! Crazy, I never thought it would be so hard.

OP posts:
SurreyWithAFringeOnTop · 29/10/2012 18:23

I think you and I have very similar taste!

Iris is pretty much my favourite girls' name - don't think it is harsh at all, pretty, unusual and just special somehow. Also love Violet, with Letty as a nickname.

Bibi is fab and would be a perfect nickname for Beatrice/Beatrix, which are both lovely unshortened too.

Fluffyfish · 29/10/2012 19:17

Elodie?
