What comes to mind when you think of Amber, is it lovely or too chavvy?

Lovely

delilah88 · 24/09/2012 16:47

Hippy name - pretty though!

lisaro · 24/09/2012 16:48

It's a pet's name.

PandaWatch · 24/09/2012 16:50

Beautiful. It's top of our list for any future DDs! And we are not chavs :)

heliotrope · 24/09/2012 16:50

My two boys both would have been Amber. It's high on list for dc3 if girl.... So obv I think lovely and not chavvy.

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 24/09/2012 16:52

DINOSAURS!

But then I'm weird. I like the name though likes of precious and semi-precious stones are too popular for my taste atm.

Startailoforangeandgold · 24/09/2012 16:54

A very handsome girl with striking long hair, normally plaited that therefore bleached into stripes when she let it down.

She one of the brownies I helped with and long hair was unusual in the mid '80s

Lovely name

LizLemon007 · 24/09/2012 16:54

I think it's beautiful. I considered it.

LizLemon007 · 24/09/2012 16:55

lol at dinosaurs. I did think of amber, the stone, with a little million year old fly trapped in there containing the dna of a dinosaur.

PandaWatch · 24/09/2012 16:58

"DINOSAURS!"

Grin

This makes me want to use it even more!

CaptainWentworth · 24/09/2012 17:08

We had a tortoiseshell cat called Amber (her brother was Jet). Lovely name though, and she was a lovely cat who reached the grand old age of 19!

Arwhen · 24/09/2012 17:09

Hm ok, to me those semi-precious stone names always sound like topless dancers or escorts...

Redhillibilly · 24/09/2012 17:13

My very first thought is Amber Le Bon. despite this, I love it!

worldcitizen · 24/09/2012 17:15

...topless dancers or escorts...there might be some truth to this, BUT I have met quite a few Ambers who were all middle-class university students...pretty, longish hair, natural, sporty, and simply nice and friendly.
But I could imagine this name to be found across all sorts of social circles, which is not a bad thing in my book...

worldcitizen · 24/09/2012 17:15

...and that was in the U.S...guess it's important to mention for more claritySmile

TidyGOLDDancer · 24/09/2012 17:16

It's a dog name for me. I've known two of them!

It is pretty though.

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts · 24/09/2012 17:19

Forever Amber the novel. Or a child I knew as a kid.....I don't' think its chavvy.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/09/2012 17:20

It's pretty but a bit dated imho. Like Jade. Lovely name but a bit 80s.

Sorry Blush

ripsishere · 24/09/2012 17:22

Exactly what I thought Bitoutof. I knew three girls called Amber. T'was very popular in the 80s and a tiny bit dated now.

LizLemon007 · 24/09/2012 17:23

I agree with worldcitizen. It has been linked to topless dancing on mumsnet at least but the only ambers I know are all sporty, academic and wholesome, so in my neck of the woods it's a good name.

PandaWatch · 24/09/2012 17:25

It makes me laugh when people say a name is a dog's/cat's name because all the dogs we've had and all the dogs and cats I know of now all have human names - off the top of my hea, out of ones I know now, I can think of a Peter (dog), Keith (cat), Angus (cat), Britney (dog), Bob (dog), Daisy (cat), Jeremy (cat), Phoebe (cat). And two goldfish called David and Ashley Confused.

suburbandream · 24/09/2012 17:26

Not chavvy at all - think of that jewellery designer girl in Made in Chelsea Grin, she's vair posh

Dogsmom · 24/09/2012 17:34

I think Amber will be the new Ruby.

littletomato · 25/09/2012 13:54

Amber can definitely be a little bit "chavvy" in the US, as worldcitizen points out, but maybe not so much here.
