I'm a fan of classical names - dp has come up with this one. What do you think? Too way out there...?

Pmsl. Biscuit

TudorJess · 06/09/2012 20:22

It's quite a nice-sounding word, it really should be a name, but they'd be forever getting dictionary/geography type comments. How about Atticus - I'm not keen on it but it seems quite an MN name at the moment...?

Kirsty Allsopp from 'Location Location..' has a son called Bay Atlas. Not sure about it myself!

tara0202 · 06/09/2012 21:04

Oh no sorry. That is one of the worst names I've ever heard on here. Just my opinion.

PurplePidjin · 06/09/2012 21:15

Atlas? Dictionary? Thesaurus? Encyclopaedia? Lexicon?

All obsolete now we have google...

RnB · 06/09/2012 21:56

I take it that's a no from you lisaro and everlong :)

Tudorjess, Atticus is dp's first choice :), I've said no though. Prefer Atlas actually...

hellokitty123 · 06/09/2012 22:14

It has a nice sound to it, although I've never met a real life Atlas.

Here's some more info on it: appellationmountain.net/2011/09/01/baby-name-of-the-day-atlas/

wizzler · 06/09/2012 22:16

No
Atticus is marginally better

Lastofthepodpeople · 06/09/2012 22:17

I also like classical names but I hadn't thought of that one. I really like it but probably wouldn't be brave enough to use it myself.
(I wanted Atticus for DS but DH vetoed it :( )

scarlettsmummy2 · 06/09/2012 22:17

I think it is a lovely word, but unless you are very posh and a bit eccentric it may be hard to carry off.

MildredIsMyAlterEgo · 06/09/2012 22:18

yy to the 'weight of the world' comment, it was the first thing I thought of

EdithWeston · 06/09/2012 22:20

I don't think any of the names of the male Titans are really usable, sorry, nor really of the gods. Might he go for heroes instead? Perhaps Jason or Perseus?

seeker · 06/09/2012 22:23

"I think it is a lovely word, but unless you are very posh and a bit eccentric it may be hard to carry off."

And even if you are very posh and a bit eccentric, your son may not be. It's not you that has to answer to- and for- the name for the next 90 years. A fact that all the "am I brave enough to....." brigade seem to forget!

ladymariner · 06/09/2012 22:27

No, definately not. Too much pressure on the kid to live up to that name......

WetAugust · 06/09/2012 22:32

Ha Ha Ha - you cannot be serious?

RnB · 06/09/2012 23:12

I love Hercules too, so clearly I am WetAugust Wink

What did you go for in the end Lastofthepodpeople?

OP posts:
WetAugust · 07/09/2012 00:13

Hercules was the name of Steptoe's carthorse.

RnB · 07/09/2012 04:08

Who's that?

OP posts:
lljkk · 07/09/2012 04:26

Atticus is cool but no decent NN for it.
Please not Atlas.
Must be something here that sounds okay to modern ears.

Littlecherublegs · 07/09/2012 08:53

Its a no from me too, sorry! Just doesnt seem like a 'proper' name.

Atticus is better, though I still wouldnt go for it.

Other suggestions:
Amos
Felix
Linus
Hector
Cornelius
Rufus
Ulysses
Lysander
Artemis
Cosmo

RnB · 07/09/2012 09:59

Like most on your list except Amos, littlecherub. I already have an Artemis Smile

It's interesting...it's seems the negative reaction to Atlas is more because it doesn't seem like a proper name...? Or does it sound horrible? Or is it too associated with maps etc? Or because he was a Titan?

I think it actually sounds nice - but I do get that it's very unusual...
