I'm a fan of classical names - dp has come up with this one. What do you think? Too way out there...?

I like it Smile

pumpkinsweetie · 07/09/2012 10:15

Ribbing-stupid phone!

Mama1980 · 07/09/2012 10:16

I like it Smile

iseenodust · 07/09/2012 10:18

No to Atlas, think it's the map thing. Do like Artemis.
Atticus is nice and from above Hector, Rufus, Lysander.

TudorJess · 07/09/2012 10:22

I think it's the map connection which makes it seem like a noun rather than a name IYSWIM?

Footinbathtub · 07/09/2012 10:31

YESSSS!!

Go for it, it's great, strong and very boyish. . Love it.

Ecgwynn · 07/09/2012 12:14

Jason is a bit more mainstream but also classical.
80s fashion is cool again, how about naming your child after an 80s screen icon?

WithACherryOnTop · 07/09/2012 17:32

No.Just no.Perhaps as a middle name,but certainly not as a first.It's a ridiculous first name.

AgathaTrunchbull · 07/09/2012 21:54

Amos isn't classical.

No, I think everyone's aware that Atlas is a proper name, but the association with the book is too strong. Think of his geography lessons!

Other Titans' names:
Oceanus
Hyperion
Prometheus
Astraeus

Does Atticus need a nickname? It means 'man of Athens'. I keep hearing this one mooted on here, but haven't yet come across someone who's named their child Atticus! I rather like it, but as we're not having a boy, and combined with our surname it sounds like machine gun fire, I've been vetoed...

LeBeauReve · 07/09/2012 22:03

Atticus is absolutely AWFUL (imo obviously) I cannot understand why it has suddenly become popular on MN. I don't think I have ever heard a more pretentious name. It actually makes me cringe.

Atlas doesn't sound too bad but I agree it doesn't really sound like a real name. That said, if I heard somebody was named Atlas I wouldn't think eurgh what a dreadful name at all.

applepieinthesky · 07/09/2012 22:31

It's not awful but I think you would have to be a certain type of person to pull it off. Much better than the pretentious Atticus. I never understand why some names are so popular on mn but I never hear them in real life. Persephone, Atticus, wtf?

CommunistLegoBloc · 07/09/2012 22:38

Every time I heard someone say his name I'd be tempted to add 'shrugged.'

But then I'm a bit of a twat.

StormGlass · 08/09/2012 00:31

An atlas is a book of maps. It's going to be difficult to get away from that.

And not everyone's going to be aware that Atlas was a Titan (and holding the weight of the world on his shoulders) before atlas was a book of maps.

IMO it's a very very silly name to give a child.

seeker · 08/09/2012 07:00

"anybody got an Atlas?"
"pass the Atlas"
"look it up in the Atlas"
"there's an Atlas in that slept over there"

And every time the teacher says something like that, some bright spark will make a wisecrack.

carrielou2007 · 08/09/2012 12:01

Right up there with Lushe please don't Smile

SoupDragon · 08/09/2012 12:16

Atticus is far better if only because it is not a book of maps.

Pancakeflipper · 08/09/2012 12:20

I am with the "what if he is a super skinny kid/adult?". He'll hate if he's got a slim build when he gets to his teens.

randomimposter · 08/09/2012 16:19

FWIW I much prefer Atticus to Atlas.

RnB, you have great name taste, and I see we may be neighbours on the labour ward, or passersby on the prom walks shortly? Live Hanover and due 1/10 (ELCS) if not before...

LeeCoakley · 08/09/2012 16:32

Atticus started cropping up after the Beckham's named their baby Harper. Noticed 'Scout' has been around recently as well.

Atticus could be Attie for short. I quite like that!

SirGOLDBoobs · 08/09/2012 17:00

It would be a huge weight on his shoulders.

Sorry, couldn't help it.

Callipygian · 08/09/2012 17:57

I like Atlas, although it always reminds me of Atlas shrugged.. So if that's not your political outlook then maybe reconsider?

Lolwhut · 08/09/2012 18:13

Sorry but I think it sounds a bit pretentious, which, as we all know is not allowed on MN. Smile. However, It is a nice name and if you and DH/P like it, that is all that matters.

I have to agree with all the Atticus suggestions. I Recently suggested renaming my DS's Atticus and Leander as their existing names are too common (which is also not allowed on MN).

yes, I realise Atticus and Leander are rather pretentious too

Lolwhut · 08/09/2012 18:14

One very good thing about Atlas is that it is not Lushe.

WandaDoff · 08/09/2012 18:16

My 1st thought was that he would be carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, as many others have said.

Anonymumous · 08/09/2012 21:19

Too much scope for teasing, I fear. On the other hand, I do love Hercules, Zeus and Thor!
