What do you think of the name Lushe as my baby daughter's name?

What do you think of the name Lushe (silent e) as my baby daughter's name? Plenty of people have the surname Lush so why not have it as a first name? I already have a daughter called Harlowe which caused uproar with the family but has been received well in nursery but I need something just as unusual for my new arrival due in January. This is my first post so please be nice to me...

this is a wind up though isn't it?
nobody calls their daughters Harlow and Lush?

NellyJob · 02/09/2012 02:14

oh sorry harlowe and lushe

ravenAK · 02/09/2012 02:57

Lucia?

nooka · 02/09/2012 04:03

Don't assume that if you make a name up your child will be unique. Our old childminder gave all three of her children interesting names with odd spellings but when they got to school they all found that they shared a name with someone else!

sashh · 02/09/2012 04:04

I've lived in 5 different areas in the UK, my brother lives in another.

When I lived in Oxford it was used as slang for something being nice. In every other place it has just had the meaning of drunk, usually a drunk woman and occasionally the local slag.

Having Lush cosmetics does not alter this. Please don't.

IdPreferNot · 02/09/2012 04:33

Lana? It's got the old Hollywood feel of Harlowe (I know Jean was without an 'e', but still... and I like Harlowe. Nice name.)

Whatever you pick, here's the top tip: DO NOT TELL YOUR FAMILY UNTIL AFTER THE BABY IS BORN AND NAMED. This is for you and DH alone to decide. Everyone else will simply criticise because they can. Once it's a done deal, they'll all have to suck it up!

comixminx · 02/09/2012 05:33

Someone up thread has already suggested Fuchsia which is nice and very unusual: hard to spell tho! Lots of folks will misspell it as Fuschia (for years I thought that was how it was spelled... Blush)

mathanxiety · 02/09/2012 06:06

How about
Tierney (more old Hollywood to go with Harlowe - Gene Tierney), and both Jean/Gene too. Weird.
Paige
Mia (again Hollywood, but I think it's popular)
Sydney
Pearl
Leigh (again Hollywood, Vivienne Leigh)
Stella
Cleo
Paloma
Ainsley
Larkin

fanjodisfunction · 02/09/2012 08:35

Love the name Harlowe.

Like Skya too

Brooke I have known a few, so not that uncommon.

Here's some unusal names I don't here

Isis
Io
Calypso
Callisto/callista
Sparrow (isn't this what nicole called here other DC)
Linnet
Capri
Silver
Cassidy

I read Lushe as loo- shay.

No! I just thought drunk straight away. It's really not nice. What about Marley?

Anonymumous · 02/09/2012 20:56

You might want to drop Brooke - it was the 50th most popular girl's name in 2011, with 1216 girls called this. It isn't 'unusual' in the way that you would like it to be.

Why not look at the ONS statistics - you can find some seriously unusual names on there if you scroll all the way down Table 6!

www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/re-reference-tables.html?edition=tcm%3A77-266770

PercyFilth · 03/09/2012 00:34

I know a Brooke, but he's an elderly gentleman.

Blu · 03/09/2012 00:45

Isn't there some joke about Harlow - Margot Asquith being adressed by Jean Harlow as Margott said 'the T is silent, as in harlow / harlot' or something? Are you having us in just a bit, OP?

You can't possibly call a child Lushe. If it doesn't mean drunk it means 'highly gorgeous and desirable'. Not a thing you want a young teen to be dealing with, esp if she ends up going thorugh a spotty phase.

Jane is nice, or Mary, and both very unusual these days.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 03/09/2012 00:50

I like Harlowe. Glad you're not using Lush as it is a bllody AWFUL word used all the time "ohmgod that's so LUUUUSH' in terrible west country accents where I live.

If you like Skya and unusual names what about Schuyler (dutch pronounced skyler).

Fuchsia is also lovely.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 03/09/2012 00:52

But yes people will spell Fuchsia wrong all the time, I think it is one of those words

swooosh · 03/09/2012 00:54

I don't actually mind Harlow as a name - and I live in the town next door to it!! (though it is a bleak bleak town)

Lushe is an awful name

Badgerina · 03/09/2012 00:55

My parents both think it's hilarious to deliberately pronounce Fuschia "Fucksia".

They're a right pair of comedians Hmm (but it makes my point)

Badgerina · 03/09/2012 00:56

Fuck. Fuchsia. Haha! (spelling)

mathanxiety · 03/09/2012 00:59

Yes, I think there are definitely a few drawbacks to Fuchsia.

zingally · 03/09/2012 11:54

Terrible.

Bluefrogs · 03/09/2012 12:06

chiefowl has definitely the best list,I live in Harlow and it's the most depressing concrete grey dump of a place.
Great though if you want a selection of poundshops, pawnbrokers and phone shops :)

PercyFilth · 03/09/2012 12:51

What about Harwich, that would go well with Harlowe.

Oh wait, it should have an unnecessary e on the end. Harwiche :)

StealthPolarBear · 03/09/2012 13:04
Hmm
CherryBlossom27 · 03/09/2012 13:31

Nicole Richie's daughters full name is Harlow Winter Kate and her son is Sparrow James Midnight according to Wikipedia.

Depending on when your little girl is due, could you use something to do with the seasons e.g. Summer, Autumn, Winter, or months, e.g January,March, April, May, June - these are all real names that I've heard or read in magazines, I thin there's an actress called January Jones?
