I think I like old fashioned names - anyone care to share what their grandmothers/great-grandmothers were called.

Grandmothers and great aunts (both sides - me and DH):

Margaret (Peg), Ada, Adeline (Addie), Phyllis, Gladys, Mary, Bernice, Muriel, Marien, Clarice, Marjorie, Margaret, Bridgit, Winifred, Ellonor (Nellie), Minnie (probably a nn but I don't know what for).

grandmothers : Evelyn Anne and Bertha Catherine
Dh grandmothers : Elizabeth Ida, Isabel Frances
great-grandmothers : Gertrude Elizabeth, Annie Florence, Catherine Helen, Florence Alice (Ada)
DH great grandmothers : Edith, Elizabeth Anne, Martha, Ada Belle

Ones I particularly dislike : Bertha, Gertrude, Ida, Florence, Edith and Ada. The rest are fine.

Mine were/are Joan and Eliza Ayronwen. DH's were Pamela and Lily (although she hated Lily - too old fashioned(!) - and went by her middle name, Patricia!)

Violet and Sarah[Sal]

UniS · 15/08/2012 22:50

GMs - Sarah ( known as Jean) & Joan ( her parents wanted to call her Jo-ann but vicar refused to christen with that name).

GGMs Sarah ... no idea about the other 3.

GGGM - I'd hazzard a guess that one was a Sarah ... seems to have been a family name.

My grandmothers are Sylvia and Dorothy. DHs are Margaret and Elizabeth.

We both had a great grandmother called Rose. Although mine was offically Florence but no one knew that until she died. Not even her children.

CaptainWentworth · 16/08/2012 12:06

Edna (with older sisters Annie nn Nancy, and Mary)
Marjorie

CaptainWentworth · 16/08/2012 12:08

McKayz, my mum is Margaret Elizabeth- my grandma always used to have to explain that she was named after her grandmothers/ great aunts, not the princesses!

Ohmydarlin · 16/08/2012 22:16

Grandmothers were Annie and Margaret (Maggie)
Great Grandmothers were Ann, Margaret, Alice and Stella
DHs Grandmothers were Hazel and Joan. I think his GGM was Emma.

cheesesarnie · 16/08/2012 22:18

Dorothy (Doll as a nn, she was married to a ted so they were dolly and teddy Smile) and Yvonne

neversaydie · 16/08/2012 22:59

Susie Constance and Mabel for grandmothers.

My great-grandmothers were Georgiana, Amy Florence and Maria. Don't know what the last one was.

One of DH's grandmothers was Lilian. No idea about the other.

ceeveebee · 16/08/2012 23:04

Maternal: Gladys
Paternal: Dorothy
DH's maternal : Florence (our DDs middle name)
DH's paternal : Marjorie

I think we picked the best of a bad bunch for our DD!

Cwtchbach · 17/08/2012 20:55
