Strong name for a girl - PLEASE HELP, EXHAUSTED LISTS!

Hi all - driving myself and DH crazy. We've exhausted our baby names list and cannot find a girl's name we like.

The problem is our surname - most people seem to think of it as the royal surname... so without saying it, I think you can probs guess what I mean. Get asked if people should curtsy when they meet us which is SO FUNNY.

Which means every name I have liked, everyone has said is too pretentious. I like traditional, strong names though love Ivy and Madeleine but apparently, these are not nice.

Everyone's driving me crazy and whilst I know I can't let other people decide for me, I don't want people to hear DD's name and think we're pretentious twats.

Though am close to fucking everyone off and calling DD Elizabeth Mary Anne Blah Blah Every Royal Name You've Ever Heard Of, just because I'm sick of it ha!

Heeeelp!

I loath poison Ivy how about Arden, I know a gorgeous one.

aliportico · 14/08/2012 21:26

Tilda is a good nn for Matilda, sounds less cutesy than Tilly.

Right - I've compiled a shortlist based on the suggested names so far:

Alissa/Alyssa
Serena
Matilda
Madeleine
Liberty (my favourite, but is it too much?)
Holly (had a dream last night that we called her this)
Evelyn (I loved Everly, but apparently it's not a real name)
Catherine
Vita (loved this as a nn for Victoria, but DH hates Vicky, Vic)
Lara
Mila
Ivy (DH says meh)

What would you think if you heard of a little girl called Liberty?
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Vita Sackville-West, I can only think of the one Vita but she was fab!
I think Liberty sounds proud, stoic, tough, individual but I dislike the shortened Libby which always sounds very middle class. I'd be more inclined to shorten it to bertie !! or even just give her a nick name like Bunty.

Liberty is pretty. Lib or Libby for short.

DO NOT TELL PEOPLE what you are thinking of calling your child! They all have their own opinions and can call their own child whatever they like.

This is YOUR child! So once you have named her Jezebel, everyone will get used to it! Wink

I give you

Romilly
Grace
Eliza

Rouen · 15/08/2012 10:58

Ooooh Eliza!

I really like Liberty, for me it conjures up images of the statue of liberty (strong, confident female) as well as freeness of spirit.

I also really like Mila.

Good luck in the name search.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 16/08/2012 08:40

Helen
Ellen

And I like Evelyn from your shortlist.

CanoeSlalom · 16/08/2012 08:43

From your shortlist I like

Alyssa
Serena
Holly
Evelyn
Catherine
Lara (if short for Larissa)
Ivy

perceptionreality · 16/08/2012 12:58

I like Liberty, as others have said Libby is a nice nn from that.

NoMoreCake · 16/08/2012 16:24

milkteef · 16/08/2012 16:27

Amelia, Erin, Rhiannon, Anna, Chloe.

Any of those OP?

milkteef · 16/08/2012 16:28

Amelia with Mila as a NN or do you want Mila as the full first name?

FireOverBabylon · 16/08/2012 16:40

Solange? I've always loved it as a strong, grown up name.

Also, have you considered Irish names:

Roisin (Rosheen)
Caitlin etc?

CJ2010 · 16/08/2012 16:41

Millicent

Rouen · 16/08/2012 18:03

I like Mila as the full first name.
Fire love Caitlin! That's going on the list

Sorry, late back to this. I don't use a nick name for Madeleine but her friends call her Mads. Maddie makes our teeth itch.
