Been watching 'Game of Thrones' and thought these were really pretty names.

What do you all think?

Arya. Prefer the character too.

EdithWeston · 12/08/2012 15:46

I'd never heard either before and I don't take to them, sorry.

Of the two, I'd prefer Sansa, simply because I wouldn't know which possible variant of pronunciation it was, and I know I'd get irritated by an enduring need to explain.

Thegoddessblossom · 12/08/2012 15:58

Like both very much. Love GoT too.

ChunkysMum · 12/08/2012 19:08

I think they're lovely names, but I'm not sure I'd ever be brave enough to use them as they're a bit unusual.

Out of the 2 Arya sounds the best.

Sansa mqkes me think of an electrical brand, Like Sanyo or something.

IHeartKingThistle · 12/08/2012 19:12

I did point this out on the other thread about Arya the other day, so sorry to repeat myself, but Arya is too much like Aryan for comfort for me. A bit white supremacist IYSWIM. I think that connotation might come across to people who dont know GoT.

It is a pretty name, I just thought I'd better point out the possible negative connotation!

BrittaPerry · 12/08/2012 19:12

Arya is cooler as a character :-). Both lovely names though.

BrittaPerry · 12/08/2012 19:13

I heart does have a point...

BigusBumus · 12/08/2012 19:17

Actualy yes I Heart, I hadn't thought of that but now you say it....

Anya?

JollyHockeyStick · 12/08/2012 19:19

I like Arya. Or Kaleesi.

Sansa doesn't sound good the way it is pronounced in English.

Ephiny · 12/08/2012 19:21

I love GoT/ASOIAF but don't love either of these names enough to use them.

Slightly prefer Arya, and she is a fantastic character (though in the later books her storyline is becoming somewhat dark and unsettling, so maybe I'd want to wait and see how she ends up).

CleoSmackYa · 12/08/2012 19:23

Iheart I never noticed this! Shock

ouryve · 12/08/2012 19:29

There's an mp3 player on the market called the Sansa Clip. Just saying.

DangerMousey · 13/08/2012 17:01

You can adapt the spelling of Arya slightly, by sticking an 'i' in it:

Ariya.

This is a persian name, I think, and is very pretty. And it gets rid of the
Arya(n) risk. It will also probably help people know how to pronounce it (Ar-ee-er). I think if you stick with the 'Arya' version, you run the risk of people saying it "Are yer?"....especially where I live with our accent!!

Ariya is a beautiful name :)

VolAuVent · 13/08/2012 18:45

Arya reminds me of Aryan, so not good connotations. Sansa too much like Salsa!

How about Anya, Ariana, Sadie or Sanchia?

Ephiny · 13/08/2012 19:00

There's an Arianne in the GoT books as well, lovely name IMO.

Or you could spell it Aria instead? I haven't heard of the Ariya spelling but that's very pretty too.

Virgil · 13/08/2012 19:01

Agree with the Arya Aryan connotations. Although there is an Aryan at my Dcs school which caused quite a few eyebrows to be raised.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 13/08/2012 19:08

Love Arya, and I like the idea to maybe put an I in, Ariya. But I would pronounce this Ar-eye-ya, not ar-ee-er as above!

LittleWhiteWolf · 13/08/2012 20:10

Arya reminds people of Aryan? Confused Ar-ya. Air-ree-an.

I've told Dh that if we decide on DC3 and have a girl, we'll call her Arya, although I love Sansa, too. Might give her Adolfa as a middle name just so there is no confusion on my white supremicist connections. Hmm

OneLittleToddlingTerror · 13/08/2012 20:26

Arya, I much prefer her. A bit more feisty.

ELHasShutUp · 14/08/2012 08:33

I like both, but slightly prefer the sound of Sansa.

Did you see there were three baby boys called Tyrion last year?!

attheendoftheday · 14/08/2012 09:08

I love Arya, not so keen on Sansa.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 14/08/2012 11:03

Aria is a "proper" name iirc, so a bit more 'normal' than Arya? (which I'd pronounce ar-ay-a rather than Ar-ee-a tbh)

gemma19846 · 18/02/2015 10:03

What did u decide on op? I am having this problem now lol. Aryan is a common indian boys name btw and was around waaaaay before Hitler turned it into something negative. I think we are going to name our daughter Ariya xxx

wesH · 18/02/2015 10:35

a better idea would be to not name your child after an appallingly bad TV show
