Pets with human names would it put you off?

A collegue asked me if I had decided on a boys name yet I said not officially but it's looking likely he will be Jacob . Another collegue (who is rather annoying and I don't like much) laughed in my face and said "hahaha that's my cats name !!"

Would it put you off?

Not at all. You should never run on a barge and you should never tell people your baby names.

No. It's only a colleague anyway. The baby and said cat aren't in the same house or have any connection. Sounds like this person said it to be irritating tbh. Ignore.

Savoy is very wise in saying keep all names decided or being considered to yourself.

Well DS1 is Oscar (which I am reliably informed is a dog's name) and DS2 will be Spike. So no. It doesn't put me off Grin in fact, I do it deliberately.

I'd be more inclined to laugh at her calling a cat Jacob tbh. Ignore it. It's a lovely name (for a human).

No, both my cats have human names, and I hope it wouldn't put people off.

Although my childhood cat at a lovely human name, I couldn't use it for DD. My friends brother did give his DD the same name as their childhood cat, though.

And yes, you should never tell people what you are going to call your baby. I am still cringing two years on for telling a colleague I didn't think she should call her baby a certain name she had mentioned her DH liked, because it was very popular (the last 3 people I knew who had babies had chosen it). Guess when she decided to call her baby.....

My cousin has a dog of the same name that we have chosen...I couldn't care less. It's a gorgeous name.

Our dogs have human names (which seem to be mentioned a lot on MN) and I wouldnt use them myself but if I liked a name I wouldnt care if an aquaintance had a pet called the same.

I however am rapidly going off our choice of girls name as one of the girls on our street is called it :(

All the dogs and cats I know are nicer than most of the people! I'd think any baby should be proud to share his/her name with a pet.

Jacob is a classic name and I've never heard it used for a pet before.

Some names come up time and again as pet names and so there are a few I'd avoid.

Cinnabar you are a person after my own heart! Also, my parents - they named my brother after my grandfather's dog, Tim. Who turned out to be a girl (the dog, not my brother)

Heavens, no, it wouldn't put me off. A cat named Jacob? Very, very odd. I've heard people say one of my favourite names is fit for cows, and if I have the chance will most certainly be using it anyway. I've got friends with no children that treat their pets like children, and I do think some of them use their favourite people names for pets b/c they feel they won't get to use them on an actual human.

A very good question... I had a Great Aunt Daisy who was elegant and kind, and I don't know many cows that fit that description. Wink

When I was pg, DP & I decided on Dylan for a boy. Then I found out that the dog that poos in the back lane if the owner doesn't keep an eye on it was called Dylan.

We had a girl, I was glad... Grin

No, it wouldn't I was told my Dds name is a cats names, met a few dogs with my Dds name and a school mum has a dog with the same name. Doesn't bother me I think the name sounds silly on a dog/cat.

Wouldnt put me off. My two.cats have human names and I was very very close to still using GirlCats name on DD as I love it so much.

In the end I realised its just not practical to have two people / members of the household with the same name.

Fwiw, Jacob really isnt a traditional human/pet name (such as Spike or Rex) so I really wouldnt worry.
