my dd1 is a sophies shes 20 ,did not know many of that name when she was born now they is lots also my gd is olivia -rose , my ds2 name not there

RubyFakeNails · 13/08/2012 21:02

Fatima I don't know. Its never been intentional, and I never looked at name lists. There have only ever been around 10 names I like, it used 2 be 3 and over the years I've found more. I really don't like most names so for me I've always heard it and just known.

I don't care if people think them ridiculous or they don't sound right or how will they be judge. I just know when I hear it. Sounds bizarre but I can't offer any other explanation.

jemjabella · 13/08/2012 21:02

I must be dense. I had no idea Oliver was so popular and yet it was #2 in 2011 and #1 in 2010? I feel all common now. Wink

BeehavingBaby · 13/08/2012 21:05

DD1 and 3 hurtling towards the top ten, I know IABVVVU but I do feel a teeny bit grumpy about it. DD2 has hovered around the 400ish mark for years. All family names though so I don't really mind Smile

BeehavingBaby · 13/08/2012 21:06

Softening actually, just means that lots of people think that they are nice names Smile

raininginbaltimore · 13/08/2012 21:12

It was important to me not to have a top ten name as my name was top for year I was born. There were 4 in my primary class, 3 at secondary, loads at uni and where I work. I hate being raining M, etc.

goodstuffhappens · 13/08/2012 21:14

Goodness... can anyone post a link to the stats that are actually easy to understand? I googled the national statistics website and got a pretty inpenetrable load of lists from 2006... obviously doing something wrong but would love to have a look! TIA

fivegomadindorset · 13/08/2012 21:18

24 Elvis' born last year.

DD has yet to make the top 200, DS has cracked the top 50.

RubyFakeNails · 13/08/2012 21:20

Use Volauvents links from her second post. Then you can download the spreadsheets and look at Table 6 for all the names.

narmada · 13/08/2012 22:00

Some of my faves from 2011:

Empress; Fanta; Hasty; Queen; Bee; Marvellous; Tuba and Velvet. I know, I know, probably largely african virtue names but they are still wow.

Sheer brass neck bravery medal to those parents who named their girls Beryl, Brie, Doreen, Gertrude and the three parents who named their daughters Toby.

I haven't even opened the boys' names list yet. Why is this so interesting????!

RubyFakeNails · 13/08/2012 22:01

Tuba is Turkish, quite popular there apparently. I work with one.

I'm still Grin at some though.

blueeyedboymeetsbrowneyedgirl · 13/08/2012 22:30

31 Girls named Reem? As in from Towie?

Tigerbomb · 13/08/2012 22:38

13 boys called Spike Grin

7 people actually called their son "A" - did they run out of ideas?

threeleftfeet · 13/08/2012 22:52

I used to be really keen on the name Spike (as in Milligan). If I'd had a DS in my 20s he could well have been Spike!

confuddledDOTcom · 13/08/2012 22:56

I've just remembered reading on here a previous year that they don't include names that only have one person of that name. Would love to know what they excluded!

Wow, DD1s name is much more well known, and very popular worldwide as it is a very Catholic anem, but only 46 of her name on the list, with DD2s name, that I never hear apart from her and one historical figure, had 50 girls!

My sister taught a Marvellous :-) Such a lovely name, makes me smile whenever i think of it.

Mmhh... DS' name isn't even in the full list. It's a top 30 name in the Netherlands and I knew it was unusual here, but not that unusual. No wonder people raise eyebrows when I tell them his name!

DoItOnce · 14/08/2012 11:46

There are 5 girls called Halo. Note, probably best not to let 15 year old DS's choose new DD's name

Also there are a handful of girls called Sequoia and a few girls called Maple. I hope none them are twins.

Devora · 14/08/2012 11:58

My dd's name has gone up 196 places in 10 years. In the year I was pregnant, it was lurking in the middle of the top 100. Now they're bleedin everywhere Angry. It's not like I tried to get an unusual name - I had a very unusual name and absolutely hated it as a child - but just not three in every street, ta very much.

Devora · 14/08/2012 12:15

Fascinating to look at the full list. I'm really surprised that Edie, Flora and Maddie get such low rankings (239, 412, 365) as I know a few of these. Whereas I don't know any Amelias [I live on desert island emoticon].

Also interesting to see my own name gaining in popularity - still low 400s, but there are now 2 at my dd's school so it is clearly on the up.

3boysgirlontheway · 14/08/2012 13:26

DD is in the top 50, the boys are outside the top 100. However we are in Ireland and DD isn't even in the top 100 here and the boys names are not even on our stats. Us Irish seem to be a bit more "traditional" in our naming styles.

5madthings · 14/08/2012 13:29

when we chose names for ds1 and ds2 they were not in the top 100 names, now they are both in the top 50, that is 13 and 10 yrs later tho!
