We have 2 dd, both with middle names from my side of the family. Dc3 (gender unknown) due in a week. Dh wants to use middle name to reflect women in his family, specifically his nan. She is great and loves this idea ( he told her before me) but doesn't like her own name (Joan) but really wants her mums name... Lurlene.

How can I tell my Dh and his wonderful nana that this makes me think American stripper or extra in true blood...

I know its q middle name, but yikes. Or am I being silly does anyone like it?

Sounds like a cheap butter substitute crossed with a window cleaner. Sorry.

Bunbaker · 31/07/2012 20:24

Is that a real name?

NiceViper · 31/07/2012 20:24

Can you have a quiet word with DH about your true reaction to the name? If you agree to using it, he should know what it costs you. You might als like to think about have two middle names, to dilute it a bit.

For I've never heard it as a name before, and would otherwise have assumed it was a 1960s manmade fabric, or an ersatz fake cooking fat. Sorry.

meala · 31/07/2012 20:24

here Reminds me of an episode of the Simpsons

SilverSixpence · 31/07/2012 20:25

Sorry it's awful

Minty82 · 31/07/2012 20:25

Hahaha, that is fairly horrendous...with any luck you'll have a boy and it'll be a moot point! Does DH like it?!

roteelefant · 31/07/2012 20:26

lurlene is horrible.

Joan isn't that great but as a middle name when it is after someone it is perfectly fine.
Could you go for something related to Joan? Johanne, Jane, Joanna etc of even Siobhán?

roteelefant · 31/07/2012 20:29

even if it was a boy you could always go with John (male version - actually Joan can be male but that may be slightly to much)

KittieCat · 31/07/2012 20:32

Could you alter it a bit? Perhaps Lene or Lena... It's not a great name...

ChickensArentEligableForGold · 31/07/2012 20:33

OOh. No. Lurlene is not great, is it? Hmm.

CaptainHetty · 31/07/2012 20:34

I'm afraid Lurlene would be a definite no from me, even as a middle name.

DawnOfTheDee · 31/07/2012 20:35

Does Joan or Lurlene have any reasonable middle names you could use?

BuntCadger · 31/07/2012 20:36

Just no

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 31/07/2012 20:45

Dear God is that a real name? Shock

Just checked - it is Shock Shock

Apparently a deviation of Lorelei, which I much prefer.

goGBTeacher · 31/07/2012 20:53

I think just Lene would be ok.

Or Jean is great and a definate hommage to DH's mother?

olimpia · 31/07/2012 20:54

Sounds like a contraceptive pill.
Definite no for me.

Lucyellensmum99 · 31/07/2012 20:56

It sounds like a country and western singer, or soap

Sickandsad · 31/07/2012 20:57

Why not combine the names and have Jolene (cue Dolly Parton, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Joleeeeeeene)Grin

thisisyesterday · 31/07/2012 20:57

oh meala beat me to it.
saw the name, thought of the simpsons.

although probably most people wouldn't

I have to say it isn't really my cup of tea, but as a middle name? why not!

I actually quite like Joan though! what is her middle name? are there any other family names?

nkf · 31/07/2012 21:01

It's a middle name. The name is pure trailer trash but so what? It's family and a middle name.

ifIsaynodontjustaskdad · 31/07/2012 21:40

It gets worse. If its a boy his family tradition is that it will get bainbridge as a middle name.

I prefer Joan as a middle name but Dh nana is insistent that she hates her name, but really loves the idea of her mum being commemorated. Nana is 94, I love her, I really don't know how to politely explain my reaction to her mums name. I like the idea of Lorelei though, well, more than lurlene..

Neither nana, nor Dh's lovely mum have middle names. Dh's mum really hates her name so can't go there either.

Lurlene was the name of a country singer in the Simpsons wasn't it?

Nobhead · 31/07/2012 22:00

No- you just cannot- Lurleen is an american trailer park "Jerry Springer" name. But that's just my opinion of course Grin

exoticfruits · 31/07/2012 22:02

No
