Expecting DS5 in a few weeks. Thought name was chosen and sorted but just recently i've 'noticed' the name Gideon. Firstly on the closing credits of a tv programme i was watching and then today in a newspaper article. It's caught my attention and im really starting to like it. What are the thoughts? Should mention that i like quirky and different names too, without them being too weird or 'made-up' IYKWIM.

George osbourne's real name.

Shudder.

cookielove · 28/07/2012 21:23

My DP's very close friend is a Gideon, apparently he is a top bloke i can't comment as i've never met the man. However it was a name i had never heard of before and seeing as i've known Dp for 10 years or so the name often pops up, and the more i hear it the more i love it although we will never be able to use it so i think it's a fab choice.

I love it Grin

noddyholder · 28/07/2012 21:23

no

5madthings · 28/07/2012 21:24

i know a little Gideon, well he is about 2? its a lovely name and not well used, but still known enough that everyone knows how to say it etc. It is a bit quirky and different :)

4boyzmum · 28/07/2012 21:25

I know!!! Shock But DS2 is called George and he's lovely so I aren't letting that influence my decision!!

Selks · 28/07/2012 21:25

I quite like it, but it risks getting shortened to 'Giddy'.

OhBuggerandArse · 28/07/2012 21:26

Cruel, callous, clammy and incompetent S&M dungeon inhabitant, directly responsible for the misery of millions and destroyer of the NHS; but fine if you don't mind any of that.

AreYouAbleMabel · 28/07/2012 21:28

I love it, one that I have been considering

HugeMedalTally · 28/07/2012 21:30

Oh, Bugger, you beat me to it!

I mean if even he didn't like it, then it must be bad.

Also, wouldn't people expect him to go round putting Bibles in odd places?

4boyzmum · 28/07/2012 21:30

Well, not naming him in his honour so that's not a deal breaker for me!! Wink

Nothing wrong with Gideon, proper old fashioned biblical name Smile

If you're worrying about associations, I'd be more concerned with the Gideon bibles in just about every hotel room than with George Osbourne.

OhBuggerandArse · 28/07/2012 21:36

It's not your intention that matters, it's what everyone else will assume. For at least twenty years, particularly if you have another one called George. You'll be condemning the poor mite to a life time of having to explain himself - or explain that his parents aren't in fact obsessively aspirant Tories. Unless you are, of course.

WanderingOkapi · 28/07/2012 21:40

The seventh brother in 7 brides for 7 brothers ! I like Grin

4boyzmum · 28/07/2012 21:43

TBH im not certain that people would assume that my children were named after a chancellor that will have long disappeared by the time they are anywhere near approaching adulthood?? Just saw name Gideon and thought it was sweet!!! DH has just mentioned the bible link too!

BardOfBarking · 28/07/2012 21:52

Love it - I know 2 Giedeons and they are both uber cool. Go for it!

5madthings · 28/07/2012 21:52

i wouldnt have assumed it was after the chancellor, i would just assume its a nice name and perhaps you like the biblical reference? but nothing other than that :)

AlpinePony · 28/07/2012 21:53

Love it. Wanted it. Got called a pompous prickly by my husband.

There's a beautiful song by the Waifs with a lovely melody "Gideon, you're up with the sun and you've done 100 things before half past nine". Then years later I learned it was Jillian and not Gideon ha-ha.

Sarcalogos · 28/07/2012 21:57

Sorry but you say Gideon, and I hear Osbourne.

You are right though his peers may not make that association.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/07/2012 22:17

Love it. It wouldn't have entered my head to think about Osbourne.

shoobidoo · 28/07/2012 22:22

Gideon is fine - solid, classic name.

As it is your fifth, how about Quentin? Really like that!

Doodlekitty · 28/07/2012 22:27

I love it, love it, love it

Odmedod · 28/07/2012 22:27

The only Gideon I have known was sadly a complete tosser.

Quentin's great.

Alpine- that made me laugh Smile

ThePhantomDeregisterer · 28/07/2012 22:32

Really like it and strongly considered it, except we always shorten names and didn't think he should be burdened with Giddy! But if you're not the sort to do that then go for it!

patosullivan · 28/07/2012 22:46

But really, how many people even know that George Osbourne's first name was originally Gideon?

I had no idea that George Osbourne was ever anything other than George until looking at this thread. And I had to google it before I took that seriously.

SilentMammoth · 29/07/2012 13:56

Gorgeous!
