Margot or Iris

Could I have opinions please?

I love both of these - Iris has been my favourite for a long time and Margot is a fairly recent addition to our very short shortlist. Not due for a few months and don't know if we are having a boy or a girl but we are pretty convinced if a girl then the choice will be one of these two.

Thanks in advance.

I really like Margot, although - and you are going to hate me for saying this - children in the playground might change it to maggot :-(

Northernlurker · 21/07/2012 11:40

Margot. Iris is pretty but Margot is better. Very full of energy and she can be a cute little girl, a great teenager and then an MP or accountant or fashion designer or bus driver. Both are nice names but Margot definately edges it for me.

Northernlurker · 21/07/2012 11:41

Re playgrounds - if kids want to make something nasty out of a name they will do it out of any name.

Viviennemary · 21/07/2012 11:50

I really like both names. But prefer Iris.

Ham69 · 21/07/2012 12:21

I love Iris. Can't get Penelope Keith in "The Good Life" out of my head when I hear Margot.

DottieRose · 21/07/2012 13:02

I simply adore Iris! Margot is awful IMO!

MoonHare · 21/07/2012 13:05

Agree with Ham69. Iris is a great name pretty but strong, think Iris Murdoch. I love it and wish we could use it but doesn't go with our surname. Margot however is just so connected with "The Good Life" and not ready for a come back yet imo.

AThingInYourLife · 21/07/2012 13:07

Iris by a mile.

Margot pronounced Margo or Margott?

jkklpu · 21/07/2012 13:08

really like both but prefer Margaux spelling

PepperOnMyPaprikash · 21/07/2012 13:12

Thanks all.

AThingInYourLife - pronunciation would be Margo.

I actually loved Penelope Keith in The Good Life! So that wouldn't put me off.

iris is just gorgeous though.

So hard to make these decisions!

Ah yes, that pronunciation is nice.

But Iris is such a great, great name.

shoobidoo · 21/07/2012 14:50

Iris is far nicer!

Unless you pronounce Margot the French way (without the t), it will be Mar-got which is less nice imo. Is quite popular in Germany (amongst 60+ aged women).

worldcitizen · 21/07/2012 14:56

Oh no, no, no, no to Margot Shock.

Sorry dear OP, do not mean to crush your choice here, but that name just makes me shudder.
I'm German and THAT name has soooooo many negative connotations in german-spaking countries.
It is not only a name which today's 55-65 year olds would have.

it is also the type of woman who has that name!!!!! h no, I could elaborate more, if wished.

othersideofchannel · 21/07/2012 14:57

I prefer Iris as well.

Margot sounds nicer in French (Mar-go) than in English or German (Mar-got) so I'd only use it in French speaking countries personally.

worldcitizen · 21/07/2012 14:59

I also wouldn't say, it is popular in that sense, it is just commonly found in that age of a certain type....Blush

mopsyflopsy · 21/07/2012 15:01

Margot is indeed awful, sorry.

Iris is much nicer!!

worldcitizen · 21/07/2012 15:06

Iris is beautiful and classy and also very cosmopolitan, which is something I love.

In many countries and in many languages is this name known, also spans many generations and cannot be easily pigeon-holed to a certain strata Wink

mopsyflopsy · 21/07/2012 15:07

Althoug bear in mind that Iris would be pronounced Eer-is in many languages. Still lovely though!

noddyholder · 21/07/2012 15:07

Like both but would go for Margot as it has a newness about it which is nice and is strong

SoSoMamanBebe · 21/07/2012 15:09

I love Margot! Iris isn't that much of a pleasure to enunciate.

mopsyflopsy · 21/07/2012 15:10

"Margot has a newness about it which is nice and strong"

Confused?!

worldcitizen · 21/07/2012 15:16

Margot has a newness about it which is nice and strong

ConfusedShockHmm

This is how I am feeling right now about comments such as above.

Rarely, have I found myself jumping off my chair wanting to save someone making a mistake for life, no-one in their right mind would give their daughter this name in Germany right now.
Please OP, if you wish, then I'll comment more, but for now I better sh...upSmile

MarianForrester · 21/07/2012 15:22

Iris is really lovely.

Margot good, but she will always have to spell it/correct pronunciation which will be a big pain.

noddyholder · 21/07/2012 15:24

Why I think it sounds like a strong name Hmm ya self

Servalan · 21/07/2012 15:24

I think both names are beautiful

worldcitizen - why would it have negative connotations in Germany? Confused
