Margot or Iris

Could I have opinions please?

I love both of these - Iris has been my favourite for a long time and Margot is a fairly recent addition to our very short shortlist. Not due for a few months and don't know if we are having a boy or a girl but we are pretty convinced if a girl then the choice will be one of these two.

Thanks in advance.

My vote would go to Margot just for the reason that Margot Frank was Anne Frank's sister and I like to think of Anne and her mother and sister as brave women. I have always liked this name.

But Rainshine, that is the benefit of a global site like mumsnet: that we can get different opinions, including from those outside of the UK. Who knows where our children may study or work one day?

Rainshine
it's really old-fashioned, too try-hard, common, whatever in England

The same could be also said for Germany...

...and no, I never intended to SAY AN ENGLISH (BRITISH) PERSON COULDN'T do that...

please see it more light-heartedly and don't turn it into something, which might have hit a nerve personally Smile

evamummy

thanks, I couldn't have worded it better Wink

Rainshine · 21/07/2012 17:05

But the same could be said about the pronunciation of any name in another language Confused. You'd never call your child anything!

Lots and lots and lots of brave women and girls from that time, especially the ones who were victims and also actively involved in the resistance movement and groups, such as Sophie Scholl.

Sophie was and still is a timeless and classic name in the Netherlands and Germany, and Margot is not.

Also Hannah Arend, very, very important woman, philosopher, activist, and victim.

Hannah was and still is a very wonderful name in those countries, without the negative connotations.

You name Anne Frank's sister, I can name you at least 50 others...so what's the point here.

never said or intended to say that Margot, and yes I know how it is pronounced in English, is not right in the UK.

i have given my cross-national and cross-cultural perspective in this, and now I feel it is not fun, not light-hearted, and what's the point, if all is being taken serious on a personal level.

Bye for now Sad

Who cares, I enjoyed the book and made a comment that I liked the name that the OP mentioned that just happened to be the first name of a female in the book that I love.
You hate the name Margot, you made that obvious about a million posts ago. We know there are many other strong women we aren't stupid

hairymother · 21/07/2012 17:23

Just use both!

But iris Margot or Margot iris

PepperOnMyPaprikash · 21/07/2012 18:44

Crikey I didn't expect Margot to get quite such a strong reaction!

However I don't live in Germany, so I am not going to worry about what the name may mean there; I live in the UK and think the only possible 'negative' connotation would be the Penelope Keith one, which doesn't actually bother me either!

Thank you all though for your input - very much appreciated.

Iris is definitely my favourite of the two. I think it's sweet for a little girl, and classy for a grown woman.

coffeeinbed · 21/07/2012 21:20

I do want to know what that "certain type of woman' would be though?
