I think Xan is a much better nickname and less popular. I loved buffy though

Yellowchair · 14/07/2012 19:29

Love Alexander was on short list for ds2 used it as middle name in end. Alexander always becomes Alex but I think Xander just seems bit try hard.

PuggyMum · 14/07/2012 19:36

That's the name we have chosen if we have a ds. It's a family name but xander modern nn.

Vin diesel in xxx and xander from buffy.

We love it willow :) ... Willow? Xander? Buffy fan too?

darthsillius · 14/07/2012 19:44

I have a lot of alexanders in my family tree. One was a sandy and one was a lexy. Never yet had an Alex!

WhereMyMilk · 14/07/2012 19:44

Agree, Xander very try to hard. Alex, or Ali or Alexander much nicer :)

WhereMyMilk · 14/07/2012 19:44

Too even!

DottyDot · 14/07/2012 19:48

I lived in Sunnydale (metaphorically speaking) for a long time and we called ds1 Alexander with the full intention of calling him Xander. Didn't work - he's got an entirely different nickname at home, his teachers call him Alexander and his friends call him Al...

Worst of all, he refuses to watch Buffy with me. Shock

VolAuVent · 14/07/2012 20:14

Alexander is an excellent name. Xander is OK but personally I'd just go for the usual Alex.

MadStaringEyes · 14/07/2012 20:15

I have an Alexander. He gets Sandie or Xandie the few times its shortened.

Ds1 pronounces it Alex-zarr-nda. Like on peppa pig.

littleweed10 · 14/07/2012 20:23

I have an Alexander. We shorten it to Alex. I love the Scottish shortening which is Lex.
But the reason we chose alexander is he could shorten it as he wishes - I love zander or xander but as a nickname....

Pootle78 · 14/07/2012 21:25

Alexander, nn Xander is on our short list, I don't like Alex but like the full name and nn Xander, we're waiting now to find out what we're having and then decide on name (our short list for boys names is 1, girls is 0, due in 2 weeks!)

If you like it, choose it!

Yama · 14/07/2012 21:26

Love it!

WillowTheWitch · 15/07/2012 12:16

DH likes lex as a nn too . Think that's partly because he is a huge superman fan . Like the nn , not so keen on calling our ds after a villain ??Confused

Alexander is a great name (I have one Wink). He used to be affectionately called Ali within the family but now he's Alex. We knew another Alexander who was called Zander by his family (only spelt it that was because that's how I'd say it!). It's a very versatile name - Scottish shortened to Sandy quite often, or Alex, Ali, Al, Lex, Lexy, I don't think Xander is try-hard at all.

hypoxia · 15/07/2012 12:34

If you name him Alexander, he can decide on his nickname when he's older, and he won't be lumped with a 'trendy' try-hard name for the rest of his life. FWIW I love the name Alex and Alexander but Xander is becoming a bit too popular, I think it'll sound less 'cool' in a few years time.

HalleLouja · 15/07/2012 12:45

My brother is an Alex / Al / Alexi.

Bearcrumble · 15/07/2012 20:29

I have an Alexander. His nickname turned out to be Teppin which is nothing to do with his given name...

scrablet · 15/07/2012 20:32

Sandy?

WillowTheWitch · 15/07/2012 20:50

I like sandy and lex but I really don't like alex . Around here it almost always gets pronounces "Alec" which I really hate .

Alexander is the best boys name ever, and used by all the best parents. Wink

One of the great things about it is that it does give the child a bit of flexibility re nick names when he's older. Xander is great. I'd be quite happy if our one ended up as Xander, though at the moment he's Alex or Sandy.

Primafacie · 16/07/2012 17:22

Puremince I couldn't agree more ;)

I really like Sasha (Russian NN for Alexander) but it's very difficult to avoid the NN Alex when they are little.

lakeofshiningwaters · 16/07/2012 17:26

puremince you are absolutely right and anyone who doesn't agree is just stoopid Grin

My Alexander is usually an Alex, though I did try Lex for a while but came to the conclusion that I'm just not cool enough Smile. Since his little sister started talking, he also gets called Ix (all she can manage!) so if you want a less popular nn you may have that!

mumzy · 17/07/2012 22:24

Another nn is Zander

DH is trying too hard to NN our boy "Big Al"! I think it's meant to be sarcastic (he was a preemie and is still quite little). I'm just ignoring and hoping it (the NN) will die of natural causes...
