We have an Alexander called Xander too! Or "Darnder" to his little brother who struggled pronouncing it when he started to talk and now it's stuck Smile

Stateofplay · 18/07/2012 14:54

Would Alexander work if you have an 'X' in your surname, do you think?

please don't say no, please don't say no, please don't say no...

Primafacie · 18/07/2012 15:12

Depends.

Alexander Xander: No. :)
Alexander Marx: At a push, but still very alliterative.
Alexander Fitzpatrick: Yes. Sounds gorgeous. considers changing own surname

Are there any Is or Ys in the surname? If so, I would say probably.

But feel free to ignore me - DD's first name and surname rhyme, which many people hate!

Puremince · 18/07/2012 17:37

Yes, it depends on the surname.

Alexander Baxter; Alex Baxter -fine.
Alexander Axminster; Alex Axminster - maybe not. But that's because of the A and the x, not the x alone.

The politician Derry Irvine is an Alexander, so Derry is another option for a nn.

Primafacie · 18/07/2012 17:45

Doh! There is no x in Fitzpatrick! I'm totally embarrassed Blush.

Anyway, you get the gist of it!

Stateofplay · 19/07/2012 11:15

Thanks anyway, and I do get the gist!

nickelbarapasaurus · 19/07/2012 11:17

i love xander.

i know someone who called their child xander rather than alexander.

I would also prefer alexander to be nn xander than alex. i don't think i like alex.

Kittenkatzen · 19/07/2012 11:20

I know an Alexander who is nn Xander, love love love it!

Do think it only really works with a southern accent though as in "Zaarrnder" (long "a")...doesn't quite sound as nice with a more clipped/northern-type "a" as in to rhyme with "can/pan/tan"

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 19/07/2012 11:29

Arf @Willow and baby Xander!

ForkInTheForeheid · 19/07/2012 11:34

I have a 4.5 yo Alexander who is still Alexander to everyone ( not Alex) but I can see this changing as it's a bloody difficult name when you're just learning to write and he's started shortening it himself purely for writing purposes. We'll see what happens when he starts primary school.

nickelbarapasaurus · 19/07/2012 12:50

Kitten - i was just thinking the other way round Grin

Shodan · 19/07/2012 13:06

I agree with all those who have said that Alexander is used by all the best parents Grin

I loved Sasha as a nn and DH loved Xander, but when it came down to it ds2 just naturally became an Alex. I only call him by his full name when he's been ignoring me...

birdofthenorth · 19/07/2012 13:15

Lovely and Xander (or Xandy when toddly) is my favourite diminutive

Kittenkatzen · 19/07/2012 15:50

nickel willing to bet that you're northern then?! (I'm southern!) :o

nickelbarapasaurus · 19/07/2012 17:04

yup! Grin

sparrowfart · 19/07/2012 22:56

I have an Alexander... and his nn is Fluffball.
