I'm starting a Baby Names mutiny... Who will join me?

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 21:56

Last year Mumsnetters rallied behind a seemingly pointless quest of mine to find a lost teddy and helped give my son a very Merry Xmas. The comments and posts on my thread were unbelievably kind and I was struck by what a great bunch of people Mumsnetters must be. On the Baby Names forum though I often read comments which would give the impression we are the total opposite and that instead it's populated by quite a vicious bunch.

I have read some awful things written about my child's name on here, comments that have sometimes really stung. If I was posting to ask advice about his weight, hair colour, acne or sexuality then I have no doubt people would reply with kindness but instead I've seen endless posts about how 'x' will never be a doctor or using 'y' is akin to child abuse and that you shouldn't have been allowed to breed if you were going to name your baby 'z' (or worse something beginning with k). I've seen parents and children described in the most awful way just because their naming style differs from others and for the most part the names being attacked are ones in the current top 100. Names that will be unremarkable, commonplace and totally acceptable once our youngsters are young no more. As most people on this forum are likely to be hormonal parents to be, or sleep deprived and angst ridden, I wonder if an intervention is needed?

I'm going to start an appreciation society for the hyphenated. A support network for those with the initial K. A meeting place for the made up, awkwardly spelt and abbreviated. You're all welcome - membership is free and there is booze on offer. Founder members include Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding), Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling), Madonna (sounds like a sex worker) and Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that). Kay Burley, Kirsty Young and Kate Middleton have shown interest in joining. Yes, Kate has the far more acceptable 'Catherine' to fall back on but it's obvious she has experienced first hand the negative affect on your life a 'K' name can cause. Our hyphenated patrons have asked to remain anonymous as they know the persecution that might follow if the unfortunate dash in their name becomes public.

So I'll start...

My name is CheeseandBunion and I have a child with a nickname on their birth certificate... And I like it.

Oh dear! haha I love 'rude dude', that's so sweet.

My brother was almost named after my grandfather, but he was born in December so I think he's quite glad he wasn't.

CreepyCrawly · 10/07/2012 16:53

MrsD I don't either. I love Charlie and Max, but DH says if we were to use them they'd have to be Charles and Maxwell.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 10/07/2012 17:02

Rudylicious
Rudymental

It is such a versitile name....

MungoJelly · 10/07/2012 17:09

I too am Spartacus have a son called Jack (and I'm a K myself!)

5madthings · 10/07/2012 17:10

it is indeed mrsdevere tho most names can be changed, ds1 got theodorable a lot when little, ds2 gets all sorts, mainly nicknames from his middle name of reuben and ds3 gets called deeby or the deebster, or deebmaster etc, i dont know why i give my children proper names tbh they all end up being called anything but their name Grin apart from dd actually we havent nicknamed her much tho i call her cheeky chicken Confused

MungoJelly · 10/07/2012 17:15

and I have a DD(16) known to all by nickname that is not even a name - just a verb!

Purplelooby · 10/07/2012 17:50

I'm in. My name is Purplelooby and my RL begins with K and is in fact a mis-spelt and somewhat made-up version of one of the sinful K names listed above. And I have done one of the careers which I apparently will never be able to do with a mis-spelt K name.

When DS is born very soon he is going to have a name that is unusual, sounds like a rude word (apparently) and has links to a TV character (apparently). AND he is having 2 middle names, one of which is my surname (I never changed it when I got married) and one of which will be chinese even though he is only a quarter chinese and probably won't look it at all... and to top it all off I'm throwing some illiteration in there - bring it on!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 10/07/2012 17:54

I am beginning to think we are related in some way 5mad what with our choice in names and the fact I call all my children 'chicken legs'

Dont ask why cos I dont know....

You have named your children the names i would have used if I had anymore children. I desperately tried to squeeze more on to the birth certs but even I had to draw the line somewhere...

PorkyandBess · 10/07/2012 17:56

My rl name is Kayleigh-Mae and I am a QC.

My husband is an eminent neurosurgeon. His name is Jayden.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 10/07/2012 18:00

Love rudi! It's so cute. I don't really get drug dealer from any names that's a weird one?

5madthings · 10/07/2012 18:00

i have NO idea why i call dd cheeky chicken, but it seems to have stuck!

your names are lovely, i particularly like Ashton. regardless of names tho children will be who they are and they are meant to be, the idea that they are not going to be a dr or whatever just because of their name is just bollocks.

my mil didnt like ds1's name as she said it was too posh! of all the reasons not to like a name, as it is its quite popular now, but my ds1 will thirteen Shock this summer and he has always been the only one of his age group. dp wanted to call him felix, we got theodore from a book dp was reading by theodore driesel? (sp) and we liked it, simple as! i also like Thalia but i dont think we could get away with having a thalia and a theo! that would be a bit much Grin

iwonder is there an official limit on middle names, or is it what you can fit on, i mean you can take up a whole line on the birth certificate, can you use more than one line? is the registrar allowed to say ummm no?

we really struggled to name ours, several of them didnt have a name for a week or two, much to mil's annoyance Grin

and i wish i could have some more babies as i have names i want to use!

MikeLitoris · 10/07/2012 18:01

My name is mike and my ds is another Jack.

I don't know any others though.

I once read on here that dd1s name sound like someone was talking through a really snotty nose. It was absolutely ripped to bits on here. And it begins with a k

Dd2 has a mn approved though

5madthings · 10/07/2012 18:02

well with Rudi i think its partly because of the song, no idea why liam woudl bea drug dealer name, have to say the liam i know is a friend of my ds2's and he can be a bit of a handful at times but is a lovely boy, dont think he is heading to drug dealer territory!

Is he 'ed?

amck5700 · 10/07/2012 19:24

bobby?

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 10/07/2012 19:32

I have 4 DC's and they all have very popular, and considered by many to be boring 'sensible' names

(although DD2 has 2 middle names Shock)

I wanted to call DD2 Tamsin
DH hated it

I have no names beginning with K (unless you count the car which is called Kevin) or hyphenated so i shouldn't really be on this thread at all Grin

My maiden name was quite unusual though. thank goodness I don't have to spell that anymore!

CrazyRandomHappenstance · 10/07/2012 19:34

I have 2 DDs, one is becoming far to common apparently and one is just awful, thanks for that BTW, but i love them and they suit my girls pefectly.
also my name is a slang word for blow job in Greek Grin

BellaOfTheBalls · 10/07/2012 19:36

My name is BellaOfTheBalls and I have a child who has a very American, asexual surname-first name AND a child with a name that was recently featured on the nasty, judgemental baby names thread.

And I love them both. Grin

Catsycat · 10/07/2012 19:45

My name is Catsycat, and all my 3 DDs names begin with "Z" and end in "a", so they have - shock horror - matching names.

Their first and middle names are all from countries / cultures to which neither DH nor I belong.

They are all relatively / very uncommon names (DD3's name is v. common in Wales though!), and potentially will need to be spelt out all the time...

DD3's name is open to mispronunciation, and featured in a satirical novel of the early 20th century, which I thought was quite funny and the plot of this encouraged me to use the name!! DD2's name could also be open to mispronunciation, and DD1's is often misheard as another, similar name.

DD3's name often meets with this face Shock.

I don't care though. Their names are all beautiful, and suit them.

Ginger4justice · 10/07/2012 19:52

My Names Ginger4justice and my DD's name is normal (whatever that is) but spelt phonetically, and therefore not the "correct" way and she will have to spell it out for ever. But it gives her (and me) a chance to spell her own name right before secondary school and neither me or my husband like how the "correct" spelling looks.

Pochemuchka · 10/07/2012 20:37

Glad to see I'm in good company here!
My name's pochemuchka and I have committed two opposing cardinal baby name sins.
My beloved first born, DD, has been cursed with a 'common' name. (Always features in the 'there are 99 of those in my Octavia's class' threads). Not even a classic name. And a name that can be an abbreviation of other names. She's Ella.

My darling DS has been given a 'K' name. Worse still, it's an unusual spelling of another name (the original spelling just doesn't suit him but the 'K' spelling really does!) People always compliment it when I tell them but if they read it first they can never pronounce it. Poor wee chap is going to spend the whole of his life correcting the ignoramuses. He's Kairon. (Pronounced 'Kye - ron' from 'Chiron')

I can't imagine either of them being called anything else!

I'm pregnant with number three now so am searching for another name to psychologically damage my next offspring with.

Suggestions welcome! Grin

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 20:39

poche I have a Kailum! Not popular here Grin I like Kairon

PrettyInDecadence · 10/07/2012 20:44

Pochemuchka, we too have a psychologically damaged DS who has been burdened with a lovely, biblical name that everyone hates. We shouldn't be allowed to name children at all as the next one (if a DS) is either going to be Kai or Jacobi. After reading this thread though he could even be a Kairon..

Pochemuchka · 10/07/2012 20:49

I like Kailum too! :)
This thread is a great idea. Let's start a 'K' uprising!
