I'm starting a Baby Names mutiny... Who will join me?

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 21:56

Last year Mumsnetters rallied behind a seemingly pointless quest of mine to find a lost teddy and helped give my son a very Merry Xmas. The comments and posts on my thread were unbelievably kind and I was struck by what a great bunch of people Mumsnetters must be. On the Baby Names forum though I often read comments which would give the impression we are the total opposite and that instead it's populated by quite a vicious bunch.

I have read some awful things written about my child's name on here, comments that have sometimes really stung. If I was posting to ask advice about his weight, hair colour, acne or sexuality then I have no doubt people would reply with kindness but instead I've seen endless posts about how 'x' will never be a doctor or using 'y' is akin to child abuse and that you shouldn't have been allowed to breed if you were going to name your baby 'z' (or worse something beginning with k). I've seen parents and children described in the most awful way just because their naming style differs from others and for the most part the names being attacked are ones in the current top 100. Names that will be unremarkable, commonplace and totally acceptable once our youngsters are young no more. As most people on this forum are likely to be hormonal parents to be, or sleep deprived and angst ridden, I wonder if an intervention is needed?

I'm going to start an appreciation society for the hyphenated. A support network for those with the initial K. A meeting place for the made up, awkwardly spelt and abbreviated. You're all welcome - membership is free and there is booze on offer. Founder members include Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding), Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling), Madonna (sounds like a sex worker) and Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that). Kay Burley, Kirsty Young and Kate Middleton have shown interest in joining. Yes, Kate has the far more acceptable 'Catherine' to fall back on but it's obvious she has experienced first hand the negative affect on your life a 'K' name can cause. Our hyphenated patrons have asked to remain anonymous as they know the persecution that might follow if the unfortunate dash in their name becomes public.

So I'll start...

My name is CheeseandBunion and I have a child with a nickname on their birth certificate... And I like it.

My name is birdofthenorth and Mumsnet condemns DD's name as an "awful"/ "big lass"/ "cow"/"horse"/"dog" name. And we love it Grin

ValiumQueen · 10/07/2012 12:11

Both my children have two middle names. DD1 has an indian name, and we are not of Indian origin. DD2 is never referred to by her proper name, just a shortening. Even I do not like her proper name Grin Both names are unisex. No hyphens or double barrelled or beginning with K. Must try harder with DS!

PandaWatch · 10/07/2012 12:13

"My name is spiggy and I have a DS1 who shares a name with a chocolatey drink"

Options? Confused

5madthings · 10/07/2012 12:18

we have only given 2 of our 5 children 2 middle names, the others only have one middle name each, do you think i have doomed them to a life of feeling hard done by? we gave ds1 both of his grandads names as middle names, the next 3 all have one middle name each and then we had dd, as she is the only girl and our last baby (probably!) we figured we would use up the girls names we liked! tho dp isnt keen on her second middle name Eden, i have always loved it :)

msbuggywinkle · 10/07/2012 12:24

My name is Msbuggy and...

DD1 is known by a boys name that is only vaguely related to the name on her birth certificate. People do this Hmm at me when she introduces herself and her best friend refuses to believe that she has a 'real' name. She loves her name and it really suits her!

Our surname is double barrelled and all three of them have two middle names.

msbuggywinkle · 10/07/2012 12:25

panda it must be Nesquick Grin

spiffysquiffyspiggy · 10/07/2012 12:26

Panda- Milo Grin

rockinhippy · 10/07/2012 12:33

Love it!! -

though I too like the baby names threads - people ask, so I do give my opinion, though I like to think that I'm generally kind enough with it

My name is rockinhippy, I love more unusual, less common names & our DD has a made up full sunday name that if googled brings up no other person in the world but her :)

Originally we used a NN for her that though frowned on then, is now becoming more popular & I often see pop up as suggestions on here now - as a result I am glad that when DD was about 3, she decided she didn't like it & lengthened the name she goes by now to half of her full name - this is a known name, but is still rare enough for us to have only ever met one other DD with the same name & have heard of only a handful

People never forget her name, which I know from having a more unusual Sunday name myself, will serve her well in life - they are generally very complimentary & she has even had 2 newborns named after her chosen NN

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 12:36

Will it cause MN to explode? Grin

rockinhippy · 10/07/2012 12:38

LOL Grin

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 12:40

Please share the name or least PM me Grin

I'm very nosey as you can probably guess.

I love this thread as I thought it was just me who named their child a unmumsnet name

rockinhippy · 10/07/2012 12:43

will PM you - mines not so unusual now - there is another on here - at least maybe - but I only ever met one other in my RL - but I've only ever used it for my work - the NN I go by is very common Grin

I'll leave you stewing on that whilst I go get a coffee & will then PM you Grin

whatinthewhatnow · 10/07/2012 12:46

cheeseandbunion for prime minister.

I have a name that when I was growing up was a horrid old lady name and I was laughed at all the time. Then, joy of joy, it suddenly got cool and celebs and actual real people I have met started calling their children it. I was cool! People were actually jealous of my name! A lifetime of misery, healed. Then, foolishly, I read a MN names thread about names you hate. My name was on there. Over, and over, and over again. Especially my NN. Which is my name, that everyone calls me. So, you know, thanks.

They should be put in a room with all those people who slag off weddings and children's parties they have been to, and then they can all be left to bitch each other to death. Then the rest of us can get on with being nice to each other.

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 12:47

I don't know anyone with my sons name.

My name was popular the year I was born as there's about 5 of us on my street Grin

Pasiphae · 10/07/2012 12:51

I dared to use a name that is on the top 5 of UK names at the moment.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 10/07/2012 12:54

Kerri-mollie Mary Anne barrington-smythe

Has this done it?

Houseworkprocrastinator · 10/07/2012 12:54

My girls names go together. (it's not "fish" and "chips")
Terrible terrible mother.

PandaWatch · 10/07/2012 12:55

spiffy Milo is a brilliant name!

JuliaScurr · 10/07/2012 12:58

my cousin's daughter's name is hyphenated and begins with K AND has a middle name - so 3 names in total
my dd's is same but doesn't begin with K

LadyWellian · 10/07/2012 13:05

My name is LadyWellian and with only one DD I had to do maximum damage all in one go.

So...

Her first name (as it appears on her BC) is a nickname. It is very short, so for 'short' we say it twice.

She has two middle names. One of them begins with K. The other one is 'not even a name'. (It's better known as a noun, though in fact it has come down through FIL's family for hundreds of years.)

Had she been the blue-eyed, blonde baby I had exp[ected to pop out, I would have called her Daisy, meaning she would never be a High Court judge.

rockinhippy · 10/07/2012 13:05

Theres a Milo in DDs class & I always thought it a great name too :)

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 13:16

pickle 2 of those names make up my full name!

amck5700 · 10/07/2012 13:17

Hmmm - We named our boys when we lived in one town and then moved........only to discover that we have named them after local roundabouts!! I mean both of them, One could be called an accident but two kids named after roundabouts?!?! - it starts to look like it was deliberate. Only saving grace is that No2 son has an unusual spelling so although it sounds like a roundabout - it doesn't look like it when written down :)

NarkedRaspberry · 10/07/2012 13:20

Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding)

Anthony Charles Lynton and Theresa Cara.

Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling)

American. Different naming conventions.

Madonna (sounds like a sex worker)

Millions of christians would disagree and see above.

Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that)

William Matthew.

Kay Burley, Kirsty Young

Youngest born in 1968.

Kate Middleton

Catherine Elizabeth.
