I'm starting a Baby Names mutiny... Who will join me?

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 21:56

Last year Mumsnetters rallied behind a seemingly pointless quest of mine to find a lost teddy and helped give my son a very Merry Xmas. The comments and posts on my thread were unbelievably kind and I was struck by what a great bunch of people Mumsnetters must be. On the Baby Names forum though I often read comments which would give the impression we are the total opposite and that instead it's populated by quite a vicious bunch.

I have read some awful things written about my child's name on here, comments that have sometimes really stung. If I was posting to ask advice about his weight, hair colour, acne or sexuality then I have no doubt people would reply with kindness but instead I've seen endless posts about how 'x' will never be a doctor or using 'y' is akin to child abuse and that you shouldn't have been allowed to breed if you were going to name your baby 'z' (or worse something beginning with k). I've seen parents and children described in the most awful way just because their naming style differs from others and for the most part the names being attacked are ones in the current top 100. Names that will be unremarkable, commonplace and totally acceptable once our youngsters are young no more. As most people on this forum are likely to be hormonal parents to be, or sleep deprived and angst ridden, I wonder if an intervention is needed?

I'm going to start an appreciation society for the hyphenated. A support network for those with the initial K. A meeting place for the made up, awkwardly spelt and abbreviated. You're all welcome - membership is free and there is booze on offer. Founder members include Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding), Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling), Madonna (sounds like a sex worker) and Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that). Kay Burley, Kirsty Young and Kate Middleton have shown interest in joining. Yes, Kate has the far more acceptable 'Catherine' to fall back on but it's obvious she has experienced first hand the negative affect on your life a 'K' name can cause. Our hyphenated patrons have asked to remain anonymous as they know the persecution that might follow if the unfortunate dash in their name becomes public.

So I'll start...

My name is CheeseandBunion and I have a child with a nickname on their birth certificate... And I like it.

I didn't realise 2 middle names wasn't on. Bloody hell it's a MINEFIELD

TheOldestCat · 10/07/2012 10:54

Oooh ooooh! My inappropriately Irish-named DS has two middle names as well.

Back of the net!

PrettyInDecadence · 10/07/2012 10:58

Oh FGS, the DC have a sodding double-barrelled surname as well.

They have the whole package, now!

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 11:00

cat you must have my son as its the same for him Grin

I've been told I've spelt his name wrong or pronouncing it wrong. I get asked if there is even any Irish in the family!

PrettyInDecadence · 10/07/2012 11:00

I wouldn't say Caelum was the right spelling by the way. It's the latin word for sky, so would get the same foul response on here as, say, Skye does!

Dudeypantsmum · 10/07/2012 11:13

My name is Dudeypants Mum and I have a hyphenated first name (and not a short one) with a long Irish surname that no-one can pronounce. My name did not fit into all those little boxes on forms as faaar too long.

Dudeypants has "whispers" one of those American names that is also a surname. It is now in the Top 10 in the Us and making it down the Top 50 over here. If I posted a 'what do you think of this name' I know exactly what comments I would get back!

ALSO as Dudey is adopted jaws drop when you mention his full name as I haven't heard of anyone else who has all 3 names starting with the same letter thanks to our surname!

Dudeypantsmum · 10/07/2012 11:17

I also wonder when I read 'those' threads about names if I, hypothetically, said I was considering NOT adopting a child due to its name! I wonder how quickly I would be flamed!!

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 11:26

pretty I didn't know that spelling existed until MN.

Not many people like the name but I do and that is why he is named it.

I couldn't care less what others call their children. I have a cousin named Jed which I have never met another off.

PrettyInDecadence · 10/07/2012 11:30

I would have seriously considered Jed if it wasn't so similar to DS's name, it's very cool!

usualsuspect · 10/07/2012 11:36

I know a Jed, he was the coolest boy in my DSs class at school and now a very cool teenager.

DamselInDisgrace · 10/07/2012 11:37

DS2's name is invariably on the 'naughty boys name' threads here/in education. It's also already featured on this thread (although we spell it differently to all the variants that have featured so far).

PandaWatch · 10/07/2012 11:38

My name is PandaWatch and we're ttc #1. If we have a DD I want to call her India, despite neither of us having Indian heritage or ever having been to India BECAUSE IT'S A BEAUTIFUL CLASSIC NAME DATING BACK TO THE NINETEENTH CENTURY!

Apparently that means I am a try-hard.

If we have a DS our favourite name is a nickname...wait for it...ending in i.

Love this thread btw Grin

Trazzletoes · 10/07/2012 11:41

My name is Trazzletoes. It's very popular (read: common). I have spent my whole life dreaming of changing it to something hyphenated or hard to spell gazeswistfullyintomiddledistance

Trazzletoes · 10/07/2012 11:42

AND both DCs have 2 middle names. So there.

insanityscratching · 10/07/2012 11:43

My name is insanity, my rl name is always on the most hated list (I hate it too).
Ds 2 has a very short name and no middle name that is generally accepted as boring and no he doesn't have the longer official version on his birth certificate. Ds 3 has a really common name but it suits him and I love it. One of my dd's has an ie ending, flowery, cutesie name but it suits her and the other has one that is boring and common.Ds1 whose name generally escapes comment is my least favourite name of my lot now.

ShowOfHands · 10/07/2012 11:43

I named my ds a name which in rl people dub pretentious or try hard but on a thread I started whilst pg, it was universally loved.

My name however, MN does not approve. I don't know why. The Beach Boys liked it.

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 11:47

Show don't worry my name isn't liked around here either Grin

Mollydoggerson · 10/07/2012 11:48

My son's name is Cillian he does not want to Kill people, it in fact means Christian, so quite the opposite to any mass murdering maniac.

Thank you - waves goodbye.

AnnaNimitty · 10/07/2012 11:55

Agree with most of what you said, but the most irritating thing about this
website is the people who wax lyrical about some of the most awful names
i.e. Daphne, Phyllis and Hamish and say "love it, love it, love it' or 'beautiful,
gorgeous name!' etc. Surely nothing is that great, take a chill pill for flip's
sake, its only a (very average) name!

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 10/07/2012 11:56

So for a full house hyphen first name double barrelled second name with a k involved and an i at the end.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 10/07/2012 11:56

Anyone have one of those??

PrettyInDecadence · 10/07/2012 11:58

Not quite, DC2 may well score a 3/4 though if I can persuade DH to use the name I love

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 11:59

pickle 2 middle names are needed too!

5madthings · 10/07/2012 12:01

nope but i do often refer to my children by their first and middle names, ds2 is oscar reuben so no i or k! but ds4 is rudi arlo and he has the i but no k and arlo isnt much liked on mnet and rudi is fairly universally disliked on mnet apart from those of us that have one! terrible 'gansta' name apparently Hmm

someone must have a kayleigh-mai or something, infact i do know one tho i think its spelt kayleigh-may! and she doesnt have a double barrled surname. bet someone on here does tho Grin

spiffysquiffyspiggy · 10/07/2012 12:09

My name is spiggy and I have a DS1 who shares a name with a chocolatey drink, a DD with 2 middle names whose nickname is a boys name and a DS2 called Ptolemy.

I am clearly a dreadful parent. And I don't care. Grin
