Amos and Rufus?

I love these names but wonder if they are too wierd. A few people have said Emmerdale about Amos but I don't watch it so I don't care :)

I also like Nathaniel which I know is a lot less controversial, but it's defo my third choice.

Thoughts? (Be nice)

I love Rufus, Amos less so.

Yama · 03/07/2012 22:33

Love both. A lot.

Yama · 03/07/2012 22:33

Have you considered Otto?

Devora · 03/07/2012 22:34

They're both nice but I especially like Amos. I can't believe people will remember an Amos from Emmerdale throughout your son's life!

While we're down on the farm, how about Seth? I've always loved that name. Or there's some crackers on the biblical names thread currently running.

WithACherryOnTop · 03/07/2012 22:34

Nathaniel is lovely.

I adore Rufus.

A definite no to Amos.

Purplelooby · 03/07/2012 22:37

I thought Rufus was the most controversial but apparently not!

DH like the idea of shortening Amos to Moss.

I like Amos, alot actually.

What about Silas?

I think you'd have to be prepared for Nathaniel to get shortened to Nathan by some people.

VolAuVent · 03/07/2012 23:56

I really like all three :)

nooka · 04/07/2012 02:49

Our dog is called Amos, after the character in Emmerdale Farm Grin. I don't think that Amos is a typical name for a dog, but Moss to me is a champion sheepdog.

sonniboo · 04/07/2012 06:53

Love Amos! Rufus is ok.

PepperOnMyPaprikash · 04/07/2012 08:33

Love Rufus.

Amos not so much, and it does say Emmerdale to me. May be my age though

TubbyDuffs · 04/07/2012 08:43

Sorry, obviously showing my age, but the name Amos just bring massive big sideburns into my mind.

I do like Rufus (although my friends do have a dog named that!)

I do like Silas as well x

sonniboo · 04/07/2012 10:49

I have never watched Emmerdale and I doubt many youngsters would either... In other words, I would not rule out a lovely classic name (Amos) on the basis of a tv soap!

evamummy · 04/07/2012 10:51

I like both names but prefer Amos as it sounds more manly/masculine than Rufus imo. I also know a lot of dogs named Rufus.

usualsuspect · 04/07/2012 10:52

I like Rufus , Amos not so much

bananaramma · 04/07/2012 11:38

I like Amos in particular. Strong, cool name imo.

squoosh · 04/07/2012 11:46

Love Rufus.

I think of Amos from Emmerdale too. No idea why because I've never really watched it. Think he was the chap with huge impressive lamb chop sideburns. That was in the 80's though I think so I wouldn't let it be a factor.

Littlecherublegs · 04/07/2012 12:19

Love Amos, Rufus and Nathaniel!!

I think out of the 3, I would go for Nathaniel but just because I prefer the 'safe' option, esp as we have an unusual surname (and DH would veto the others Im sure!).

Thinking we may have simialr tastes, I thought I'd share the rest of my (boys) shortlist with you: Smile
Linus
Dominic
Haydn / Aidan
Silas
Joseph
Cornelius

birdofthenorth · 04/07/2012 12:29

I love Amos! Mossy for short. Do it?!

tummytickler · 04/07/2012 19:09

My 5 year old ds is called Amos. It is my favourite name ever - I just love it Grin . I sometimes call him Mossy, but dh doesn't.
Rufus is also lovely.
Not so keen on Nathaniel.
I think that you won't be able to use Rufus and Amos in a sibset as they are a bit 's'y.
Also love pp suggestion of Linus - fabulous name,

ellesabe · 04/07/2012 20:04

I love both names but discounted both due to their meaning:

Amos - burdened Sad
Rufus - Red-haired (dh and I were both blonde as children)

bigbluebump · 05/07/2012 12:03

Really like Amos!

babysbreath · 05/07/2012 12:46

Sorry, but I am not keen:

Rufus - dogs name
Amos - Emmerdale Farm
Silas - Silage

blondieminx · 05/07/2012 12:48

If we have a DS in the future, Rufus is on our shortlist, it's a lovely name Smile

Amos I'm personally not keen on... DH's grandpa has a dog of that name!

rockinhippy · 05/07/2012 12:59

Amos - its a favourite of mine, a long standing family name, favourite Uncles name & well over due for a mini rivival - I would definitely have chosen it for a DS
