Which Name do you Hate Most?

I hate the name Jane; I'm not saying it's the ugliest name in the world, by a long way (that's probably Griselda), but because of associations. Firstly, it was the name of the most horrible bully at my secondary school; and now, also, there's the Inbetweeners movie, in which the gorgeous Jay gets paired up with a fat plain Jane who is not cute enough for him!

Ignored the bickering ....

I dislike Amelie - because the only one I know has wankers for parents.
I dislike Rhys (reece) for boys as every one I have met has been a little shit.

I also dislike made up spellings. We are calling him John but spelling it Johzzneee to make it original - just seems silly.

Crazyfatmamma · 03/07/2012 13:21

My son Is called Kian I like the name Kailum- its lovely.

PenisVanLesbian · 03/07/2012 13:27

I don't like K's much, they don't exist in several other languages, and a lot of K names are badly anglicised versions of nicer names.

squoosh · 03/07/2012 13:29

I hate seeing Irish names spelt with a K. e.g Kian, Kiaran, Keira etc.

They're all nice names but there isn't a letter k in the Irish alphabet.

PenisVanLesbian · 03/07/2012 13:39

Exactly squoosh, why change to K's? If you want an Irish name use an Irish name, not an anglicised Irish name.

Crazyfatmamma · 03/07/2012 13:44

Ha-All my family has been mentioned now- actually the only reason I spelt my sons name with a K was because mine and my husbands name begins with a C and thought it would be confusing!
I love the fact that people like/dislike different names, names are a very contentious issue and no one is ever going to 100% like or dislike a name!!

My name hasnt been on here yet tho- bit gutted about that as I never liked it as a child.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 03/07/2012 14:32

I think people change Irish 'C's to 'K's because they think the original spelling will be confusing.

I've only just managed to convince my DP that you pronounce Cillian (as in Cillian Murphy) with a K not an S.

FayKnights · 03/07/2012 14:35

Oh dear, I only got through the first few posts and family members name have been mentioned! I'm glad I'm not sensitive!

squoosh · 03/07/2012 14:36

My name's on here. Doesn't bother me a jot!

Showmethemhappyfeet · 03/07/2012 15:49

Hahaha DPs name is the only one on here, I'm shocked as DDs is pretty marmite. It's a type of name that's been mentioned though. And DP is in fact a little shit so meeting him would not help your opinion of the name!

PenisVanLesbian · 03/07/2012 15:58

hard C's are common enough in english though, care, can, cub, cough...why would you be confused by Cillian? surely such a person could then spell sarah as Carah? .

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 03/07/2012 16:04

VanLesbian, I don't know what goes on in DP's head Grin. He is a ferociously intelligent individual but I guess we all have our blind spots. Perhaps he was thinking it worked the same way as Cilla as in Cilla Black ... Who knows?

SPsFanjoLovesBrokenBiscuits · 03/07/2012 16:18

My name starts with a K. Spell it with a C and it looks worse Grin

SPsFanjoLovesBrokenBiscuits · 03/07/2012 16:20

2 of my brothers names have been mentioned. One with a K and one with a J.

Doesn't bother me what people call their kids tbh. If you like a name then use it. Of corse names like Paperclip and Dictionary shouldn't be used Grin

pumpkinsweetie · 03/07/2012 16:37

I hate the name Kelly, a very common name and that of a bully i once knew

pumpkin Grin thanks Wink

sonniboo · 03/07/2012 16:45

I wonder why so many of you have such strong feelings about a NAME, a collection of letters used merely to identify someone? It is not the person but just someone's name!!!

squoosh · 03/07/2012 16:47

That's true. But certain names conjure up very vivid memories of people we'd sometimes rather not remember.

PenisVanLesbian · 03/07/2012 16:50

Whether you like it or not, names matter. Studies have been done into recruitment for example, that show that employers are definitely prejudiced against certain types of names. You can also (generally/sometimes) tell a childs background, and therefore more about them, from their name.
It might not be fair but its true. Arabella Susan has a better chance at that city job than Laciee-Beyonce.

sonniboo · 03/07/2012 16:51

But don't those associations change immediately once you meet a 'nice' version of that name?

sonniboo · 03/07/2012 16:56

"Arabella Susan has a better chance at that city job than Laciee-Beyonce."

You are really not talking about the names but the class (as implied by the type of names parents choose) imo.
