Made-up name

OK, I don't want to give the actual name that I am thinking of (for a baby of either sex - due to be born in 2 weeks - eek!) but here is the formula/ problems:

Rhymes with two different names, one of each sex, so doesn't have an 'odd' ring to it.

Is not an actual name but is a word with positive associations - not a very long word BTW

Is not slang for anything nor the name of anything odd (as far as I can see from extensive google searches) - except for being the name of one (innocuous enough) body part in another language e.g. (but not) Japanese for elbow

I like the sound of it, I am sure that some friends will think it's an odd choice or even odd to make up a name but I don't like very popular names and this would have meaning for me.

What do you think - mad or brilliant?!

I'd think about how many times you and eventually your baby will have to explain/spell the name to people - does that put you off? My son doesn't have a made up name but it's unusual and I do get a bit fed up with the questions I get asked about it.

Surely 'Fen' was closer than 'Moy'?

WifiNappies · 27/06/2012 14:13

Moy was a red herring to stop anyone winning the food processor. It's Ted Rogers I tell thee!

LineRunner · 27/06/2012 14:34

Is Ted Rogers still alive?

spammertime · 27/06/2012 17:34

Ted Rogers is one of those people you just don't know if they're dead or alive, isn't he?

spammertime · 27/06/2012 17:35

But sadly wiki tells me he died in 2001 Sad

Dusty Binn Liner RIP.

LineRunner · 27/06/2012 18:01

So, anyway, tell me OP, how long have you had this lurking sense of humour failure?

SparkleFever · 28/06/2012 16:53

Koi, Zoi, Xoi, Voi, Eloi, Droi, Meloy

Without knowing what it actually is, I would say consider the following:

1 - Is there a risk the name will be mispronounced?
2 - Is there a risk you (or your child when an adult) will have to spell it continuously when giving the name over the phone?
3 - Have every other person saying 'Ooh that's an unusual name, where's that from?'
4 - Are you comfortable calling your child's name out in the street?

Really, I speak from experience as my (Scottish) mother wanted to give me and my siblings names from the country my dad is from (somewhere in Asia), so although I truly like my name, I have had the first 3 in the list my whole life, with the majority of people mispronouncing my name. It gets a bit embarrassing when after correcting them once or twice they still continue to say my name incorrectly (and make it sound horrible when I actually have a very nice sounding name).

So if it's an unusual but beautiful name, go for it, but if it's going to embarrass your child, then I wouldn't do it.
