I really like Kyle. I think it has a nice sound, and I love the Scottish connections as I'm a big fan of Scottish names.
The Kyle I know is lovely, and not at all 'chavvy'.

Which unpopular names do you love?

Lots of gorgeous names on this thread. Got me thinking about why we are so keen to afraid of using names we love just because other people don't share our tastes...

And, wouldn't it be more fun to teach a class consisting of a little Martha, Rupert, Boris, Delphie, Edgar, Jolyon and Cosima than one where half the girls are called a variation of Ellie/Evie/Sophie/Isabella and the boys of Archie/Charlie/Finn/Zach?

So perhaps we all need to become a little more confident in our choices Smile.

sorry, first sentence should read: why we are so afraid of using names we love...

squoosh · 25/06/2012 13:10

Hate all the 'but it sounds gay' references.

Trust me, that phrase makes me do a major eye roll.

MarthasHarbour · 25/06/2012 13:18

livia i came on to say Tallulah too! but i am a huge Bugsy Malone fan

I also love Martha (obviously!) but DH cant pronounce his 'th's and he makes it sound like a cockney sparra' name! Grin

MarthasHarbour · 25/06/2012 13:19

smother i work with a Rosie and she is adorable, maybe the name maketh the lady Smile

AngelaTim · 25/06/2012 13:34

Names I would willingly have called my various dcs but we did not have the confidence ...

Malachy, Aneurin ("Nye", like Nye Bevan), Septimus (although nowhere near number 7). And Wilfred. I still think we should change his name to Wilfred.

Hepzibah (for both dd1 and dd3) and Freida

Showmethemhappyfeet · 25/06/2012 14:43

Manic I love American girls names! I used one from your list too! X

lemonmuffin · 25/06/2012 16:02

Lola, Ariel, April

FreckledLeopard · 25/06/2012 16:09

Love Balthazar. Also Heathcote. These were on my Boys Name List when pregnant. People were relieved when I had a girl.

NadiaWadia · 25/06/2012 17:12

Jezebel = very pretty sound, but negative connotations!

Lately I have been thinking Tracey sounds nice as well - expect it will roll around again one day.

PandaWatch · 25/06/2012 17:20

Sirius!

Currently ttc. DH still lols everytime I mention it. He won't even consider it as a middle name :(

Anonymumous · 25/06/2012 17:42

Horatio. If DD had been a boy, she would have been called that - our family were very glad when we had a girl instead! But it's soooo cool!

ProcrastinateWildly · 25/06/2012 17:55

I love Araminta too, and Inigo.

Mooshaboom · 25/06/2012 17:57

Love Love love Martha but have the same surname as the famous one :(

tethersend · 25/06/2012 18:17

I just called DD2 Shirley, in the face of much derision.

Bollocks to them all, I like it Grin

evilgiraffe · 25/06/2012 18:26

I like Sebastian! I don't see why it would be a hated name Confused

I love the name Leonard, but suspect most people would think it very old fashioned. And not popular old fashioned like George or Jack either!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/06/2012 20:26

Huge congratulations, Tethers. :)

tethersend · 25/06/2012 21:45

Thanks Remus Smile

IawnCont · 25/06/2012 21:51

Shirley is a brilliant name, tethers - Congratulations!!!!! My friend had a Colin, though everyone said that was the name of a fifty-year-old man- He is now 6"3 and everyone loves the name.

My Dh vetoed all my boys choices - Good job I only had girls really.

I loved Jolyon (out of Forsyte Saga), Edwin, Haydn, Fabian and Kai. Most people these days associate Kai with Rooney, but I always think of the philosopher Kai Nielson, so I don't get the 'chavvy' side of it. Shame, as I think it probably is my favourite boy's name.

Cremolafoam · 25/06/2012 21:54

Loved Dora until she became an explorer
And Kenzie before Bb

rosabud · 26/06/2012 10:44

Sylvia. I think it sounds beautiful but I was never allowed it because it sounded too "old." Even when shortened to Sylvie or even Sylv, I still think it has a lovely magical sound.
