DD is due in July, and we haven't managed to agree on a name. DP's surname begins with J, so we've always said we couldn't have a first name beginning with B because of the initials.

However.... I LOVE the names Beatrice/ Beatrix and Bethan Sad

MN will be Florence as it's a family name.

I can't do it can I? She'll be teased for it at school.

But, but, I really like those names.

Use your surname?

MissTapestry · 11/06/2012 21:34

We're getting married next year and I'm taking DP's name, so it would be nice for us all to be the same. It would solve my problem for a year though!

HappyCamel I'd worry Elizabeth will be really popular this year with the Jubilee.

Also another reason I like Bethan is the Welsh connection, I'm half Welsh and Florence comes from DP's side, so it would be nice to have a part of me included IYSWIM?

I've never come across this problem with BJ in RL, only on MN. My oldest son is B J Surname, and has never had any comments about it at all, neither has his cousin who is also B (same first name) J (diff middle name) SameSurname. Also I think if you are using initials you are likely to use all 3 together, so she would be BFJ, wouldn't she?

(Now that makes me think of the BFG, sorry!!)

birdofthenorth · 11/06/2012 22:40

I knew a Bethan Jones when I was young- she was lovely & I don't recall any teasing.

ToryLovell · 11/06/2012 22:41

Why why why would you do that to your child?

DoingItForMyself · 11/06/2012 22:43

I'm usually all for the unusual names that everyone else says 'noooo!' but I'm afraid even I wouldn't. Can you imagine the taunts as a teenager bless her?

Sausage as 2 first initials you could get away with it while you are 'in control' of how her name is used (primary school) but once she's a bit older kids often call each other by nicknames and initials. DS1 and 2 of his friends are all known by their initials - even DS's PE teacher calls him that, as its marked on his kit!

StepOutOfSpring · 11/06/2012 22:48

No, don't do it. How about...

Megan
Nia
Carys
Clara
Louisa
Rebecca
Lydia
Emily
Anwen
Seren

Doomfinger · 11/06/2012 22:59

You wouldn't even have to use initials for people to know what it is! As soon as she said her name people would have chance to work it out!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought BFG though :o

yellowflowers · 11/06/2012 23:18

I think you can do it if you have a middle initial and always use that

abbypumpkin · 12/06/2012 07:55

I don't see the problem, I can't recall ever onside ring or hearing anyone get teased for their initials at school. The problem won't be for a good few years by which time the term might not be used anymore. You could name the kid A..J and in a few years time that could be associated with some horrible disease or unpleasant term- you never know! Use the name that you love. Personally I'd rather be teased for my initials than have kids pick on something personal.

FoofFighter · 12/06/2012 08:01

Who ever refers to someone by their initials though? Oh yeah, errr that'll be nobody!Confused

Gingerbreadlatte · 12/06/2012 08:04

It really isnt an issue beyond your overthinking now.

I have got a B name dd (the name you are looking at) with a J surname.
She has other middle initials so its never written down as BJ.

Its never been an issue. She is nearly 3.5

Choose the name you want- things like that will always get negative responses on here- best not to ask sometimes!

Himalaya · 12/06/2012 08:05

Is it really sad and naive of me that I thought "like in Barney the Dinosaur" Grin

milkymocha · 12/06/2012 08:06

Her initials will be BFJ? No problem?

Gingerbreadlatte · 12/06/2012 08:06

could you give her a double surname with your name? that gets rid of the issue.

So e.g Bethan Florence Tapestry Johnson (for example)

MiseryBusiness · 12/06/2012 08:08

I went to school with a Bethany Johnston - no teasing at all.

A close friend of mine is a Bethan J - no teasing at all.

MiseryBusiness · 12/06/2012 08:10

Oh and I also know a Ben with a J surname and he was never teased for it. Tbh it's only now that I've realised their initials are BJ. Never really thought about that before and I doubt many others have either.
