DD is due in July, and we haven't managed to agree on a name. DP's surname begins with J, so we've always said we couldn't have a first name beginning with B because of the initials.

However.... I LOVE the names Beatrice/ Beatrix and Bethan Sad

MN will be Florence as it's a family name.

I can't do it can I? She'll be teased for it at school.

But, but, I really like those names.

first world problem

It'll not be a problem until she's about 14, then she'll cringe with embarrassment and hate you until she's about 35. Then, once she's elderly she'll love it because she'll get to be rude to all her handsome young male carers.

I'd be tempted to do it and give her the nickname of Sookie. And just never mention that you know the obvious nickname. Oh, how you'll laugh...

Stannwigg · 12/06/2012 08:24

Oh God it's fine, really.
Living in Wales, everywhere you look you have Bethan Jones, Barry Johns, Bill Jenkins and so on. Kids will ALWAYS find a way to piss about with a name, regardless of whether there's an obvious joke in it.
I'd go for it.

ScorpionQueen · 12/06/2012 09:25

Stannwigg is talking sense. Don't overthink it. If you are in Wales they are very common (as in frequent) initials and no-one bats an eyelid.

I do like Florence Beatrix J__ though, so maybe try different combinations.

MissTapestry · 12/06/2012 09:51

Hmm, maybe I'll have another discussion with DP about it. He's probably decided he hates both names anyway knowing him!

Actually Florence Beatrix or Florence Beatrice sounds lovely!

Almost better than the other way around!

ToryLovell · 12/06/2012 09:58

"Who ever refers to someone by their initials though? Oh yeah, errr that'll be nobody!"

Actually in the world of work, possibly lots of people. Can imagine some smirking when an e-mail / agenda / minutes of meeting get circulated - Action BJ

TittyWhistles · 12/06/2012 10:07

Brian Jones

Ben Johnson

Billie-Jo Spears

Billy Joel

Bianca Jagger

I wouldn't worry about it, people are rarely recognised by their initials, unless they want to have monogrammed handkerchiefs or summat Grin

Doomfinger · 12/06/2012 12:52

I know people who have initials that mean something (MD and DR are the three obvious ones) and people do point it out. My married name made something with my first initial and people always pointed it out (oddly there were no women born in the family and all the men seemed to marry women with the same initial as me! We all hear/d it on a regular basis!)

Aworryingtrend · 12/06/2012 12:57

I went to school with a Ben Jones and don't recall him being teased, hadn't even thought about it til now.

evamummy · 12/06/2012 13:12

Agree that it may not be a problem at school (because 1. you rarely use your initials together and 2. very few kids know what a bj is).
However, at work it could be very embarassing. In our office we usually list attendees to meetings etc by their initials - and B.J wouldn't be great!

ilovemybum · 12/06/2012 13:39

I have a male friend with the initials BJ. He has never been teased at all and is actually known as BJ rather than his actual name.

ilovemybum · 12/06/2012 13:46

I also went to school with a Ben Jones. There was no mention or piss taking out of his initials. If anything his brother got more fun taken out of him for being Tom Jones Hmm

sleeplessinderbyshire · 12/06/2012 13:52

my DD has initials BJ (well BEJ - Bethan Eira J**) we thought briefly if it might be an issue but decided we liked the name too much to care

GobblersKnob · 12/06/2012 14:00

I went to secondry school with a (searches for suitable alternatives) lets call him 'Billy-James Murphy'.

He was always called by kids and teachers 'Billy-James' never 'Billy'. He was probably the most picked on kid in our year as he had a massive wind problem (which he revelled in tbf) enormous ears and buck teeth (not suggesting these are suitable reasons for endless teasing now I am an adult, but there you go).

Despite having the piss endlessly ripped out of him for five years I don't recall anyone ever making the 'blow- job' connection with his initials.

So maybe it's a non issue.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 12/06/2012 14:05

Well dd addressed a birthday card to her friend the other day with the child's first name and surname and her middle name initials - her middle name is Betty-June, and dp and I looked at the card and snorted, thinking somehow this was a terrible nickname - 'Firstname B-J. Surname', like 'Paul 'That's Magic!' Daniels' or something.

I don't think you should. Her friends might not get it, but their parents will!

AlmaMartyr · 12/06/2012 14:31

I wouldn't, DH was teased for his initials at school (fairly innocuous ones) and uses his initials all the time at work. I used mine a fair bit at school too, we always had to initial work. IME, BJ (as opposed to the full word) is becoming a bit more commonly used. Might just be my perception though.

Lunarlyte · 12/06/2012 16:28

At secondary school, we had a science teacher whose initials were 'B.J'. We cottoned on when we were about 14 and this teacher was ridiculed because of it until we left.

If it were me, I wouldn't give DD those initials. They're easy to spot and will stick. Sorry :(

sweetkitty · 12/06/2012 16:31

What about Seren? Similar to Bethan and Welsh very pretty name?

alim0706 · 12/06/2012 17:59

I just asked my DH as his initials are BJ. He's never been teased about it ever!

Seren is lovely, really lovely. Agree BJ is too much for a child to bear.

specialhero · 12/06/2012 18:32

for what it's worth I just had to google bj acronym

i wouldn't worry about it

MissTapestry · 12/06/2012 20:00

I love Seren, but haven't suggested it to DO as to him it won't be a real name iyswim, he wasn't keen on Merryn for the same reason.

  • I am aware that they are real names so nobody take offence please, it's just that we don't know any, either personally or slebs. Smile

Two things to consider:

  1. Boris Johnson seems to have done alright. Although perhaps the hair was to distract everyone!
  2. If she goes into teaching, she will definitely have to use her initials and yes, it might cause a titter.
Confused
